Yard sale signs again legal in PTC

It’s once again safe to put a yard sale sign alongside Peachtree City’s streets.

Yard sale signs and real estate directional signs were banned from city rights-of-way last June when the City Council adopted changes to the sign ordinance. That was fixed Thursday night when council approved new changes to the sign ordinance.

Council also shelved language recommended by staff that would have allowed commercial signs to be placed in city rights-of-way.

As was the case before they were banned in June, the yard sale signs must be purchased from City Hall, and they must be removed after the sale is finished. Council decided to allow the signs to be posted after 5 p.m. the day before the sale, two hours earlier than proposed by staff.

All other temporary signs — including real estate directional signs and non-commercial speech — must be dated and cannot be placed for more than 14 days at a time. While this will be difficult for real estate agents, City Manager Bernie McMullen said it will help keep worn-out or damaged signs from being used continuously.

And yes, the ordinance requires all temporary signs, including the real estate directional signs, to be in the more pleasing “brown and buff” color scheme.

Right decision. What was the previous council trying to accomplish?
