ACORN now fully funded w/ 5.5 BILLION of our Tax Dollars

S. Lindsey's picture

Does anyone really believe this is right?
You LIBS out there are you ok with this?

While we were distracted with the Healthcare "debate" they slipped this little funding bill in the DEFENSE bill.

Another 4 MILLION acres of land was put off limits to OIL or GAS exploration.. Where..? Only in the most productive areas in the Mid-West. Right where a Natural Gas and an MAJOR Oil discovery was found.

and there's more lot's more.. As we move into 2010.. Our needs as a Nation grow. We need a Government that is responsible to all of the people not just a few SPEACIAL interest groups.. We need a Government with a SPINE.

Are we going to give up our National sovereignty for the FALSE religion of Global Warming?

Are we going to give our Troops our full support instead of waffling flip flopping back in forth on a decision?

Are we going to have a Government that is run "By the People..For the People"?

OR.. are we going to just have more of the SAME..?

This was your 'Headline' - and by your own words and references, it has been proven false. Good night.

Intrigued by your headline, I read all of the “Washington Examiner” item you cited below, as well as some others.

They in no way, shape or form support a claim that Acorn is “now fully funded with $5.5b of our tax dollars.”

FEMA Suspends ACORN Grant
Issa, Collins Call for Immediate Review of DHS Grants to ACORN
WASHINGTON. D.C. – House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Ranking Member Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) and Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs Susan Collins (R-Maine) sent letters today to Department of Homeland Security Secretary (DHS) Janet Napolitano and DHS Inspector General Richard Skinner calling for an “immediate investigation of the DHS’s grants, contracts, entitlements and other forms of assistance to ACORN and its affiliate.” The letters stem from a $997,402 Assistance to Firefighters Grant ACORN received from DHS that has been halted due to concerns raised by lawmakers in both the House and Senate.

“We are perplexed as to how this organization would even be considered for a first responder grant,” Representative Issa and Senator Collins wrote. “We ask that you investigate why ACORN, which has no apparent homeland security mission, received funds from your Department. Additionally, we ask that you determine why ACORN, which does not prepare its staff in emergency management, received first responder grants that are more appropriately given to “a first responder organization.”

This is not the first time the DHS has given money to ACORN. In the 2007 fiscal year, ACORN was awarded $450,484 under DHS’ Fire Prevention and Safety grant program. The grant was provided to ACORN Institute, a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt corporation, which is a research and training facility used “to combat the poverty, discrimination and community deterioration that keeps low-income people from taking advantage of their rights and opportunities.”

“It is disturbing that ACORN was awarded a grant when fire departments all over the country are struggling to make ends meet and get the equipment and training they need to protect their local communities,” Issa and Collins wrote. “A grant of nearly $1 million in Homeland Security funding was awarded to ACORN, money that might have been awarded to fire departments.”

The Senate voted September 14 to cut off funding for ACORN. The House voted to defund ACORN just three days later. The Internal Revenue Service has ejected ACORN from the agency's volunteer tax assistance program and the Census Bureau has barred the group from assisting with the 2010 census. Last month, Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Lamar Smith (R-TX) sent letters to Justice Department Inspector General Glenn Fine and FBI Director Robert Mueller calling for investigations into ACORN’s use of federal funds and possible criminal violations. Inspector General Fine has opened an investigation.
Among the details Issa and Collins asked Secretary Napolitano to provide were a comprehensive listing of all grants provided by DHS to ACORN and its affiliates, an explanation about the criteria DHS considered for rendering such a grant, any grant awarded from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and DHS’s oversight plan to ensure grants awarded are spent in a manner consistent with the legislation.

What part of the "defunding" ENDED on OCTOBER 31st didn't you get.. They are now cleared to use the grants..

“On October 1, 2009, the President signed a Continuing Resolution (CR) to keep government programs running at their current spending levels for one month. This was necessary because Congress has not yet passed the annual appropriations bills which fund all government programs into the new fiscal year, which began October 1st.

In the Conference Report accompanying that bill, Congress included the following provision in Division B which prohibited ACORN from accessing federal funding:

Sec. 163. None of the funds made available by this joint resolution or any prior Act may be provided to the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN), or any of its affiliates, subsidiaries, or allied organizations.

However, the CR expires on October 31, 2009.”

Congress hopes Americans have short attention spans. I’m glad Andrew Breitbart, James O’Keefe, and Hannah Giles know how to get attention

Will Congress' defunding of ACORN expire Saturday?
By: Byron York
Chief Political Correspondent

When both houses of Congress voted to defund ACORN several weeks ago, what they actually did was bar lawmakers and federal agencies from giving any money to the community organizing group for the duration of the temporary budget agreement, or continuing resolution, that was in effect at the time. Continuing resolutions are used to extend federal spending, and keep the government running, when Congress can't agree on appropriations bills for the fiscal year. When the congressional defunding of ACORN went into effect on October 1, there was a continuing resolution in place that would last until October 31 -- this Saturday. The ACORN ban was in that resolution, so it will also expire on Saturday.

There are still no appropriations bills in place, so this week Congress will have to pass another continuing resolution to keep the federal government going. The word on the Hill is that the new resolution will probably be written to last until sometime in December.

The question is: will the ACORN defunding language be in the new resolution? The answer appears to be yes, at least for now. "We will do a CR this week that will basically extend the expiration date of the old CR, so the old language will stay," says one House Republican aide. The aide is "99.9 percent sure" that the ACORN prohibition will be in the new resolution; if Democrats tried to remove it, the aide says, "we would have a big fight this week."

Provided the ACORN ban stays for now, the real issue will be what happens when the new continuing resolution expires and actual appropriations bills are passed in December. Will there be a provision that says no funds from fiscal year 2010 will go to ACORN? Republicans are cautiously confident. "Democrats have a minority in their caucus that believes we should not have cut off ACORN," the aide says. "But I can't believe that there's a majority in their caucus that wants to fund ACORN."

Or at least wants to fight about it.

You are a moron...quoting half truths just to get a stink going....no one is going to fund ACORN...why do you print such things?

Your reading comprehension is lacking today.. What part of the statement "the CR ends October 31st, 2009" didn't you get?

The CR that Obama placed on the Budget included ACORN'S FUNDING.. IT EXPIRED AND WAS NOT ETENDED on Oct 31st.

AS for personal attacks.. Read some of Sugars responses to me in other post..

Lets go over this slowely:

1.What part of the statement "the CR ends October 31st, 2009" didn't you get?

2. The Oct.31 statement is accurate for May 7, 2009.

3. The Senate voted September 14 to cut off funding for ACORN. The House voted to defund ACORN just three days later.

4. All previous and future funding allocated to ACORN is now under investigation.

5. October 31 has no relevance to what is currently happening with ACORN.

I give up.. In my WORLD October comes after September.. I guess in yours well who the heck knows..

One more time...

Please note the DATE 9/22/09 ACORN still on the funding list..

and still more:

"On October 1st Congress had failed to pass the annual appropriations bills which fund all government programs for the new fiscal year, so the President signed a Continuing Resolution to allow government programs to continue their current spending for one month. As part of this 30-day resolution ACORN was denied funds.

By November 1, 2009 Congress must pass twelve appropriations bills for the new fiscal year or pass another Continuing Resolution (CR) to keep government programs running at their current spending levels. All twelve appropriation bills and a CR must include the same language as the October 1, 2009 CR that denied ACORN funds in Section 163.
Unless language is identical to that in Sec. 163. ACORN will be eligible for funding again."

Guess what it did not happen soooo....

They now have access to the 5.5 Billion set aside.. It's not hard to find I am sure you can do it..

Senate cuts ACORN funds
The Baltimore Sun is reporting today that the U.S. Senate voted 83-7 to make ACORN ineligible for Housing and Urban Development grant funds. This makes good sense given that the secretly videotaped encounter between two Baltimore ACORN employees and a man and a woman posing as a pimp and prostitute started off as a conversation about how ACORN could help the pair buy a house to start a brothel. The action comes a few days after the Census Bureau severed ties with the organization.

The lopsided Senate vote points to something that has been missing in a lot of the discussion about the ACORN videos: a sense of perspective about just how influential ACORN is. What seems to have elevated the story from a curiosity to a full-blown national outrage is the apparent sense that ACORN is pulling the strings in Washington. But if this were an organization that really had much influence, do you think it would have been dropped this quickly? If it was the trial lawyers, or the insurance companies, or the bankers, or Halliburton, would the reaction have been this swift? I'm guessing not.

I'm not excusing the behavior of the ACORN employees or suggesting that the organizaiton as a whole doesn't bear the responsibility for it. I'm not disagreeing whatsoever with the decisions to cut off funding. I'm just saying that in my experience, I cannot recall an instance when ACORN appeared to be wielding any influence whatsoever in a government decision I covered. The powers that be seemed to pretty much ignore them. We'll see how the House of Representatives reacts to the Senate vote, but I wouldn't be at all surprised to see ACORN kicked to the curb.

Those who participated in the 'discussion' were fired by ACORN. Funding for ACORN has ceased. If this is not true - give us information that is not dated May 2009. Bachman should have made at least one RECENT post if what you state is TRUE. There was no 'whore' house set up by ACORN - just extremely poor judgement in having a conversation with apparent criminals - who turned out to be government employees. I have never supported criminal activity or those who have difficulty with telling the CURRENT truth. Your problem with Obama colors your take on almost all issues. The issues are relevant. Your opinion of Obama is not.

Were you born in '48? I don't remember posting any but, but, Bush statements. He is not relevant now - and only had 29% approval rating at the end of his term. . .so I may not be alone in my estimation of his contribution to history. Time will tell. Actually, he will be well respected in Africa, where he contributed so much to the Aids research. I have no feelings of 'hate' for anyone. The emotion of 'hate' is a waste of energy. I feel very 'up' with the recent elections throughout our country - because the American people are paying more attention to 'issues' than to 'labels'.

But I still can't find it. Please site a reference for the Acorn thing.

The Dems never pledged to allow drilling in National Parks. There have been huge lease deals signed within the last two months, including off the coast of Alaska. Did you see where Exxon just sold leases they had in Utah for $263 million? Never explored it or drilled, just kept the leases that they bought for $42 million until 2 months before they expired then sold them using a loophole to renew them for Alaskan Oil. Now Alaskan can sit on them without drilling and maybe sell them back to Exxon in 8 years. Hey, I'm doing the capitalist thing, I've got their stock.

The oil companies are sitting on 43,000 sq miles of leases. If they want to drill then let them drill. Bush pushed those leases in the national parks out the door in his last week. He was worse than Clinton.

On another note, the election turned out well...

First.. See response to DM.. Acorn does in fact now have access to the 5.5 Billion set aside Obama put in the Stimulus package for them..

Oil Leases do not mean there are explorable quantities of oil in the leased area.. The Oil Companies leases large blocks of land to EXPLORE the possibility of recoverable oil.. Most Oil Leases are worthless. Some have deep reserves, however due to Bureaucracy and Environmental impact studies, Rules and Regulations.. the cost are astronomical. So until either technology catches up or a more OIL friendly administration comes in these leases sits un-used.

The end result.. WE PAY HIGHER PRICES.. and other Countries control our future.
