"Urgent" Dog Adoptions, Anyone?

muddle's picture

My family and I visited the Coweta Animal Control shelter this afternoon. One of the those we hope to adopt is actually scheduled to be euthanized if not adopted by tomorrow, 11/3.

I would take every animal there home if I could.

Can you take one? Or do you know someone who can?

For instance, we spent a little time with
this sweet shepherd mix puppy. She is very intelligent (one of the volunteers thinks she is "the smartest dog there"), affectionate, calm, and soon to be euthanized.

Shelters all over the nation are filled to capacity--an indirect consequence of the economy.

There is a terrific organization in the area,
Shelter Rescue/Please Rescue Me that works with area shelters, publicizes pets (dogs and cats) available for adoption. Have a look at their site, scroll down through their well-updated list of pets (including videos of the pets interacting with volunteers), pick out a pet for rescue and take it home!

Well, I succumbed.

My daughter revisited the Coweta shelter yesterday to adopt one of the death row dogs. While there, she learned that people from local organizations had managed last minute rescues of all but one dog: a friendly, healthy, happy-go-lucky young male rottweiler mix. She had interacted with him out of the cage and saw that he was a terrific dog. Indeed, he was already house trained--something rather unusual among such shelter animals.

At my request, she bailed him out. We are now the proud foster parents of "Pete," who otherwise would likely have been going under the needle this morning at about the time of this writing.

We're hoping to find Pete a good home soon. Assuming that we do, I suspect we'll make such "rescues" an ongoing family project.

By the time Pete is available for adoption he will have been neutered and brought up to date on all vaccines and any necessary treatment. We're also working with him on a leash as well as other basic disciplinary and training issues.

This dog will be a great friend and companion to the right person. Might that be you? Smiling

That'd be me. We have found more joy with the 2 we've saved than anything else. Nothing else comes close to bringing the joy into our lives every day as our 2. I wish more people would adopt. Whoever said they are mans' best friend couldn't have said it better!

Thanks for saving Pete.

What a great family project!! We are the proud owners of a 'collie' - adopted from Collie Rescue. These dogs who are cared for in a family environment until adoption make marvelous pets.
