Cops plan weekend DUI crackdown for Halloween

Peachtree City police and some of their law enforcement brethren will be on patrol Friday and Saturday in a special Halloween DUI crackdown event.

Friday and Saturday, police will host a series of road checks and concentrated patrols in the area to target DUI offenders. Because of Halloween being part of a weekend, officials anticipate a larger number of impaired drivers on the road than usual.

Some of the road check locations will be on high-volume corridors, police said. There will be special blood alcohol testing unit trailers on hand along with wreckers on standby to two away vehicles impounded from drunk drivers.

Peachtree City Police Chief Skip Clark said sobriety checkpoints are an effective way to maximize the city’s DUI deterrence efforts.

Agencies expected to participate include the Fayette and Coweta county sheriff’s departments, the Georgia State Patrol and the Fayetteville Police Department.

Ya know what would be actually EFFECTIVE here? How about NOT announcing this event and let the criminals follow their usual patterns and (!).... GET ARRESTED!!! Huhhhh?????

Are you gonna put flyers on the windshields of all cars in the parking lots of restaurants/bars/liquor stores, too? How about the big flashing portable sign(s) you lug around and place by the side of the roads (WARNING!!! Half a mile ahead, DUI check IF you don't turn around here to evade the police!)

Oh, and how many PD will be on the CART PATHS with those very expensive ATV's we bought you checking the DUI's on those 90 miles of Halloween thrills? You know, the ATV's you had running all over Falcon Field for the Air Show with their blue lights flashing for hours on end, annoying the heck out of the PAYING guests? It was such a high crime event. Check the record, maybe we intended them to be used ON THE CART PATHS REGULARLY?????

Oh, that's right, maybe Bernie McMullen wanted this to be a well publicized event......how silly of me to not think of that sooner.

First off, there is no evidence that checkpoints are an effective tool in stopping drunk driving or that it is even as effective as regular patrolling on the streets. Tying up your officers to sit in one spot as opposed to driving all over and observing? I'll take the latter. That's why prior to Skip PTCPD didn't do them.

Second, the idea is to keep drunk drivers off the road, not just catch those driving drunk. Announcing that there is going to be roadblocks is designed to make people think twice, three, four times before getting behind the wheel of their car.

This is a PR move and maybe it will stop a few people from driving this weekend.

Is to be the sonsummate bitch artist. It must be miserable to be you at times. I sincerely hope you are not this way around your Family....for their sake.

great adjective....maybe when I get to be perfect like you I will know what that means.

You little sexist remark kind of fits your profile.

Miserable, never. Opinionated, yes, and when I am, I come here, so I can wait for pithy little one or two liner remarks from you and know all is right in my world. Carry on, Spylgass. And know I'll be right here for ya. Smiling

So you are nicer around your Family, I presume. Smiling

S and C get confused all the time by aging people learning how to use a keyboard for the first time.

BTW, sonsummate means nothing. consummate means ultimate, the most, the highest order. To use it in a sentence, Steve Brown was the consummate mayor in PTC because of his ................ yea, I know. Can't finish the sentence, can you?

spelling error for sure....thank you for your correction. I think Goil gets my point.

Oh, gee, I guess I already knew about the typo. And what consummate means.

Your last reference means absolutely nothing to me. Former mayor, not respected by the majority who voted him out, and now column writer here. So, your point is...?? Wait, I really don't think it means anything here, does it?

While I'm sure the city does enjoy the extra income. The goal isn't to arrest as many people as possible. The goal is to deter crime before somebody gets hurt.

enjoys the income, it desperately needs it.

The goal IS to arrest as many people as possible. To get the message out that these checkpoints DO work and are not an invasion of your 4th Amendment rights. Also, to justify further enforcement such as this, to show it's effectiveness.

If only a few arrested, complaints will follow about the waste of resources by the PD. If many are arrested, we can all feel so much safer that these criminals have been documented.

Deterring crime will happen as one of many results of this action.

1) If I remember correctly, they have to announce roadblocks.
2) Drunks on golfcarts rarely injure others, drunks in cars tend to kill people.

Well said...some here just don't get it.

Just don't want to be "checked on" while on their golf carts, either.

I thought that was an honor that was "special" to Harold Logston?

Are you kidding?

Over 20 years we have hired about 15 cops, 33 bicyles, several ATVs, etc/. to patrol the cart paths at least at night

There is always something more important to do, always!
