A Peachtree City man remained in jail Tuesday, one week after he was arrested for violently assaulting his wife the evening of Oct. 19.

Matthew Smollar, 30, is accused of attempting to kill his wife Amber by suffocating her at their home on Grapevine Curve in Rockspray subdivision, according to arrest warrants filed in the case. The warrants claim that Smollar deprived his wife of oxygen by putting his hands over her mouth and nose as he held her down on the floor.

Smollar is also accused of striking his wife in the head, face and body with a shoe and also using an open hand to strike her right cheek, right jaw line, right wrist, right forearm and right shoulder.

Police have declined to release details about what occurred between the Smollars immediately prior to the assault.

Matthew Smollar remained in jail Friday afternoon after Fayette County Magistrate James A. White sent $167,000 bond. Smollar is charged with aggravated assault, battery and false imprisonment.

okay this all needs to end!!! I do not think all of this info should of been in the paper. I'm just really tired of it. Just let the family have a break. It is wrong what happened. I want justice to be done but Amber was hurt badly mentally and physically. Lets leave her along and let her heal.

you're right. But I'm curious, how can someone who attempted to murder someone even be considered for bail. Puzzled
