Edwards, Hawkins are in-laws: Nepotism?

I would like to express serious concerns about the upcoming Fayetteville election. I am disappointed that our local newspapers have made little to no mention of the fact that two of the candidates are related.

Mr. Edwards and Ms. Hawkins are brother-in-law and sister-in-law. Nepotism is, for the most part, not allowed in the workplace except family business.

We certainly do not want relatives representing 40 percent of our council. That would be like having 174 of Nancy Pelosi’s family serving in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Additionally, both Mr. Edwards and Mr. Oddo have undeveloped land or commercial interests in the city that could represent serous conflicts of interest. I understand that both gentlemen have had recent dealings with the city over personal business.

That is certainly their right but I question the wisdom of having them in elective office representing the rest of the citizens and taxpayers.

It amazes me that some people are more concerned about silly things like this so-called "nepotism". Is that the best you can come up with?? I don't personally know any of the candidates but I have met them and have had conversations with them all. I do know some voting records though. I fully believe that Mr. Edwards and Ms. Hawkins want to be elected to represent the citizens of the city of Fayetteville. They don't have some secret family agenda. I'm not so sure I can say the same thing about Walt White or Larry Dell. They've been in the city council long enough to build up a nice little pension I can bet you that. And the longer they are in there, the bigger it gets. Who do you think pays for that?? We do, that's who. Taxpayer money going to their pension plans. Now, don't get me wrong. I don't have anything against pension plans. But seriously, have either one of these guys actually earned a pension? And how much are they getting?

I just can't get it out of my head that so many ignorant people are actually going to try to vote these two guys back into office. And why drag Paul Oddo into this? What did he do? He's actually trying to improve our city council. And who is Bill Dick? Where did he come from? He's running against Mr. Oddo. It looks like to me, he and Larry Dell know the same campaign sign maker. I can't imagine that Larry Dell or Walt White would go out and find someone to try to run against Paul Oddo so that they could have absolute control over the council again...I just can't imagine...

Come on people of Fayetteville. Open your eyes and see what's happening. Let's put people in the council that have OUR best interest in mind and not their own.

Many people have moved out of Fayetteville because of the problems they encounter with the politicians there. Hopefully enough smart ones stayed and will vote new people in office. (except for Mr. Oddo, he's a keeper!!)

Don't give up hope.

Maybe you should be seriously concerned about the cronyism on the city council. Check their voting records.
