Motorists who have griped about speed limits on the three-lane stretch of Ga. Highway 74 in Peachtree City have won a small victory.

The Peachtree City Police Department has announced that the Georgia Department of Transportation has agreed to increase the speed limit slightly from the current 45 mph.

The northernmost section of the road ranging from 600 feet south of Paschal Road to 1,270 feet south of Crosstown Drive will have the speed limit increased from 45 to 50 mph. The section of Hwy. 74 extending south from that point to Rockaway Road will be bumped up from 45 mph to 55 mph, police said.

The new signs are expected to be installed in the next 30 days.

The DOT’s decision came after an engineering study was conducted in response to community concerns, police said.

Police remind motorists that construction on Hwy. 74 from Cooper Circle to Ga. Highway 85 is expected to begin in the near future, which will result in significantly reduced speed limits in the construction zone.

....now if they would just lower it to 30 at the intersection of 74 and Rockaway Rd where people are always being T-Boned...... lower Hwy 74 to 45 mph from the 54/74 intersection north gradually increasing to 55 at Kedron Dr.... after that lower the entire length Braelinn Rd to 30 (currently 40 but most do 50 in spite of most of the subdivisions having blind entrances)... from there move on to Robinson Rd and lower its limit to 35 from Braelinn Elementary School south to the intersection of Redwine. This stretch of Rd is loaded with vehicles from surrounding counties doing a high speed "cut thru" of the city, especially on weekends......then there is Crosstown Dr which also needs to be 35mph so you can leave the Kroger or Blockbuster parking lots without having to burn rubber to merge into the traffic which routinely is going 50-55mph (also many of whom are from other counties "cutting thru" the city......anyone else annoyed with stupid/unsafe limits in their neighborhoods please chime in!

But I think it would be better if we simplified it a little bit. Lets just go ahead and make a city wide speed limit of 30mph on every road.

Considering everyone drives 10 over the posted limits it just might work!

...that anyone with an out of county tag is "cutting thru"? Some of us are spending our money in your city. I frequent your retail stores, grocery stores, pharmacies, dry cleaners, doctors, dentists, gas stations, golf courses, restaurants and many other businesses. The "bubble" is more often than not, my destination, not just my path to somewhere else. I probably spend more money in your city than in my own. Just so you know, you are welcome in Senoia anytime. Just bring money. (Of course, you might be t-boned pulling onto Hwy 74 from Rockaway.)

Most of the speeding non Fayette County vehicles I see on Robinson Rd, Braelinn Rd and Crosstown Dr (between 74 and Peachtree Pkwy)don't appear to be turning off into any stores, just going thru. On weekends in the summer Robinson Rd by my house sounds like Atlanta Motor Speedway. I don't care where anyone is from, just wish they would slow down and respect the speed limits. In spring of 2004 right after we moved here my wife took a weekday afternoon ride to Senoia just to see what was there (and maybe stop and spend some money). When she got to the Senoia city limits on the North side of Rockaway a City Police officer began following her. She was not speeding but he followed her the entire way thru town, even when she turned around on Main St to head back home. We assume it was because her car had out of state tags. We were angry didn't go back to Senoia for 2 years after the incident. Now we go to and sometimes thru Senoia regularly....and we obey the speed limits. Fortunately there has not been a repeat of the stalking officer. In hind site I am not angry at the Senoia officer now and wish the Peachtree City Police would be a little more aggressive pursuing speeders on the roads I mention. I rarely see an officer pulling anyone over for speeding on those roads. Maybe they (the police) are all just too busy writing accident reports due to all of the unsafe driving around the city and I will be the first to admit that many of the offenders also live in Peachtree City.
