Motorists who have griped about speed limits on the three-lane stretch of Ga. Highway 74 in Peachtree City have won a small victory.

The Peachtree City Police Department has announced that the Georgia Department of Transportation has agreed to increase the speed limit slightly from the current 45 mph.

The northernmost section of the road ranging from 600 feet south of Paschal Road to 1,270 feet south of Crosstown Drive will have the speed limit increased from 45 to 50 mph. The section of Hwy. 74 extending south from that point to Rockaway Road will be bumped up from 45 mph to 55 mph, police said.

The new signs are expected to be installed in the next 30 days.

The DOT’s decision came after an engineering study was conducted in response to community concerns, police said.

Police remind motorists that construction on Hwy. 74 from Cooper Circle to Ga. Highway 85 is expected to begin in the near future, which will result in significantly reduced speed limits in the construction zone.

PTC should do the right thing and at least refund the cost of fines to the folks they wrote up going 10mph over the ridiculously low speed limits, (fat chance). I think that possibly it was a conspiracy with the state to pick up some extra revenue anyway.

I'm just say'n...

If DOT wants to keep up with the speeds being driven on that stretch of road they need a bigger bump than that. Or maybe it could be a good solution to the city's budget problems.

All you yahoos out there will add 10 to 15 over whatever they post anyway. So why bother. Why are you all in such a hurry. Only the stupid are late for work every day. And you know who you are.

Don't worry about the speeds on 74 South. If Plunkett and Boone get re-elected, we'll eventually have traffic signals every 1,500 feet on 74 from SR 54 all the way down to SR 85!

Plunkett is using the current low speed limit to ride up and down 74 looking for spots to place a Sams, Costco, BJs, Home Depot Expo, Old Time Pottery, Spatula Emporium & Warehouse, Piggly Wiggly Super Saver Canned Food Warehouse, Batteries-Bundt-cakes-and-Beyond, Manny Moe and Jack's Credit Clothier Depot and Thong Boutique, and of course a Tanger Outlet Mall. She won't be happy until PTC looks like Buford Hwy.
