BLAME FOR BOE'S FINANCIAL ILLS

Newsboy's picture

Reading the WSJ article about how Fayetteville hopes to transform itself into a "lifelong community" and is actually considering allowing 200 units on 38 acres on Grady Avenue makes me wonder "what might have been" if the dimwits on the county commission had not said NO when Sun City asked to develop River's Farm on Sandy Creek Road? Never mind the 10-15 year security to the construction industry from 3,500-plus houses, how many millions would have gone to local coffers from impact fees and the value of the raw land being taken off conservation status? Instead, Spalding County is reaping the benefits and (ironically) its schools have plenty of cash.

The WSJ even quotes the biggest landowner who would have been Sun City's neighbor, Jan Trammell, in support of higher density: "We can't keep doing what we've been doing."

1. BOE finances need A LEGIT RESERVE ACCOUNT

2. Someone at central office needs to take budget cut ideas from teachers seriously. Or hire a personnel evaluation company to see where cuts can be made.

3. BOE needs an economic disaster plan. Prepare in advance to cut non-essential services. (and let's have some transparency with that, eh?)

4. How about some legislators with a spine to insist a halt on state education cuts? The redneck Guv seems to favor new fishing holes instead of job creation via education. Duh!!!

look at the big picture -- bringing financial security back to the school system without lowering the quality of education and expectations of excellence the community demands is going to require serious rethinking about the way this county develops into the future (i.e. growing the tax base) ... and we're already behind the curve.
