Yes, excellent movie! My favorite is Remember the Titans. I've watched it several times and always cry. Oh, and don't forget Brian's Song (the original). All three are based on true stories and have a wonderful moving message: overcoming the impossible, moving past adversity, the power that comes from working together as a team, and the beauty of true friendship.

I saw Brian's song, not the other two---due to seeing Brian's Song, I suppose.

Tell me, what is it about such movies is it that you think does well?

Marshall still doesn't have a football team worth a plug!

Is it you are glad such things haven't happened to you?

I'm serious.

Thank you for your long statistical answer and excuses.

Would not Marshall have had a football team if there had been no movie?
I suppose I don't get the "inspirational" tear jerker stuff that didn't really happen.

I know that catastrophes, and this was one, do draw those concerned, and others, together to have something in common to pass the time.

I have witnessed the same sort of pity parties in West Virginia with coal mine blasts and many deaths. For a week or two the churches are also full, albeit very little is in the collection plate----but everyone eats their fill, in the first few days. One can bake pies and fry chicken and make potato salad for a few bucks, or from the garden.

If you bother to check on those widows and kids in a month or so, you will find that they are desperate and living like paupers.
Maybe College students parents and wives aren't paupers, but you will find that all the attention doesn't last long. It is God's will and his problem!

I hope you don't find that unsympathetic but it is what happens!
Maybe that is the "empathy" that we as humans demand or else we feel abandoned. They do anyway in a few months is my point.
Some are stronger and just want to get away from such stuff.

I like people--I am one-- but I don't care for pretension.
Anyway, your thoughts might make it into a book sometime, probably already has.

Sometimes I think he believes he is playing Devil's Advocate but doesn't know how. Other times I think he is really just a nasty, mean, ornery, curmudgeon who is hen-pecked at home and uses this forum to spew his unhappiness. Or then he may just be suffering from over exposure to those cute young things on Fox. Every now and then when he takes his meds regularly he almost makes sense--but then he catches himself and reverts back to the Bonkie we love to hate--or at least dislike at the moment---let's all just pray for him--that would make him madder than anything else.

Yes, he is a bit of an enigma isn't he? I used to think that he was an ignorant, nasty, vile, little man and would respond in a way that abased myself to that level and lowered my own grace and dignity. Sometimes I just can't help it, that scrappy young woman I once was rears her head and takes over an otherwise poised response.

Now, I just think that Bonkers likes to play, as you said, devils advocate and wants to see if you can really argue your point.

Then again, maybe he does sit on his front porch and yell at kids to get out of his yard. Smiling

Either way, that scrappy young woman in me can handle anything he throws my way. Smiling

it when we pull back. He is really a trip----love it when he answers his own blogs under another name. I would love to sit down with him and see just how he is in person. Probably this mild mannered, sweet granddaddy type. Bet he had tea parties with his little granddaughters--but would hate to let us know that. I think he would be unhappy if we did not play to his blogs. Hope he is back soon. Enjoy your posts.

Against my better judgment, I am going to respond to you. After all, that's why you pick isn't it? You're seeking a specific response. Well, here it is:

First, let me begin by saying that Marshall has had numerous NCAA 1-AA National Championships. In 1997 they moved up to division 1-A when they joined MAC (Mid American Conference) where they went on to win the MAC Championship title for 3 consecutive years led by Randy Moss and Heisman trophy candidate Chad Pennington. Further, Marshall's program was the "...winningest program in America in the 90's with a 114-25 record." (article from ESPN Classic, October 2003).

Now, that's not to say that they would have fared the same in the SEC (South Eastern Conference). You're only as good as your schedule. For example, Ohio State dominates their conference because they play in a week conference and therefor have the edge when it comes to recruiting. The SEC is a tough conference where, on any given Saturday, anything can happen and the competition in recruiting is fierce. Would Marshall have fared the same playing a schedule with Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Auburn, Tennessee, LSU, Arkansas, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, South Carolina, or even Vanderbilt and Kentucky? Most likely not, but it really isn't fair to take their accomplishments away from them.

They lost damn near their entire team in that 1970 plane crash. Sons, fathers, mothers, brothers were all gone in one fatal swoop. The town was devastated and yet managed to find the strength to pull together, start over with little to nothing, and forge ahead.

What I find so moving about movies such as this is the perseverance, endurance, and absolute strength of the human character.

Call me silly, but I am often inspired by that which is inspirational, I am moved by that which is endearing, and I feel empowered by that which gives hope in a world so full of pessimism and sorrow.

So, tell me ... why are you so contrary?

Stay sweet, Bonkers.
