Local residents are organizing a charity bike ride to benefit an Army lieutenant and McIntosh High School grad who was seriously injured while serving in Afghanistan Aug. 17.

Lt. Dan Berschinski lost both of his legs when he stepped on an improvised explosive device while checking on his troops. He is currently undergoing a series of surgeries at Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

The “Ride for Daniel” is slated for Saturday, Oct. 10 with a $20 per bike entry fee (1 or 2 riders). The fee is considered a tax-exempt donation and checks should be made out to “The Benefit of Daniel M. Berschinski.”

The even will start at Peachtree City Christian Church on Ga. Highway 74 and south Kedron Drive, going to the Great South Harley Davidson in Newnan where the Great South HOG chapter will serve hot dogs and hamburgers. The trip back will end at Partner’s Pizza and Y-Knot in Peachtree City.

Registration for the event begins at 9 a.m. and the bike run begins at 11 a.m.

Funds raised will be presented to help Berschinski and his family.

Those unable to ride but who would like to contribute may mail them to SouthCrest Bank in Tyrone at 105 St. Stephens Court, Suite A, Tyrone, Ga. 30290. Donations can also be dropped off at Images By Rainy, 255 E. Lanier Avenue, Fayetteville, Ga. 30214.

It's an admirable noble initiative, we don't have to compensations from the Government to help us deal with our pain. Other responsible communities should engage in this kind of initiatives as well, there is a lot to learn from this event and I hope the fund raised were enough to help the lieutenant look for a better future, we owe that to him.

Fayette & surrounding areas please turn out for this tribute to Lt. Dan Berschinski. Rain or shine, I will be there and hope this is just the first of many fund-raising events held to honor this brave soldier. Thank You Daniel for your service to your country on our behalf.

Wouldn't it be better to secretly send some cash or take it to a bank somewhere and not embarrass this fine officer with a public funding?
The donors need no recognition with their party.

I'll do that.

Does anyone have any information on where Lt. Berschinski will reside once he is released from hospital? Is it PTC or somewhere else?
