Report details prostitution sting, arrest of 2 teachersFri, 09/11/2009 - 12:58pm

When Doug Dee traveled to the W hotel in DeKalb County May 1 with his girlfriend, he had at least an inkling he could get into trouble with the law. According to a police report, then-Whitewater High School Band Director Dee made arrangements via phone to meet two female prostitutes at the hotel that night. Before he was arrested, Dee searched one of the undercover police officers for a microphone and remarked, “I just wanted to make sure this wasn’t entrapment,” according to the report. The girlfriend, then-Whitewater Chorus Director Kelly Butler, expressed some hesitancy about the arrangement. The report indicated that Butler told one of the officers, “I might freak out, what should I say (laugh), can I say I am freaking out?” One of the officers responded: “Honey, just say stop. We don’t want you to be uncomfortable.” Dee agreed to pay $200, both in his phone exchange and in the hotel room, according to the report. The sting used the website Craigslist, apparently to advertise the “services” of the undercover officers. During the phone call, Dee told an undercover officer, “My girlfriend is feeling naughty and I would like to meet up with you,” the report said. Contrary to previous media reports, there is nothing in the police report to indicate that Dee thought the prostitutes were underage. After they were taken into custody by police, Butler told officers that “she was sorry, and Doug and her wanted to try something different tonight.” Dee, 40, was arrested on the scene but Butler, 33, was allowed to leave. She was arrested at a later date, officials said. Both were charged with misdemeanor pandering. Both resigned their positions Sept. 10 after the school system became aware of the charges for the first time since the May 1 incident, officials said. According to DeKalb court records, Dee was arraigned in court this past Thursday also. According to jail records, both Dee and Butler live at Balmoral Apartments in Peachtree City, but in different units. Both faculty members began working for Whitewater in 2003. Dee had been with Fayette County schools since 1997 and Butler was hired by the school system in 2001. The school system will work diligently to find highly qualified replacements for both, said school system spokesperson Melinda Berry Dreisbach. The school is also appreciative of parents and students who continue to support both the band and chorus programs particularly as they begin to make the transition to new leadership, she said. login to post comments |
