Crowded slate ahead for PTC

The time to put up or shut up is over. And there are plenty of people who put up their money to qualify in Fayette County’s municipal races that will be decided in November.

The city with the largest number of challengers is Peachtree City, with eight people qualifying for the mayor’s spot and the Post 3 and 4 council seats.

By the time the dust settles in November, Peachtree City will have chosen four of the five members of the council, an unusual situation. The only incumbent not involved in an election race this year is Doug Sturbaum, who still has two years remaining on his term.

In Peachtree City those who qualified include:

For mayor: Don Haddix, Cyndi Plunkett, Scott Rowland. Haddix resigned his current post on the council last week in order to qualify for the mayor’s race. Incumbent Mayor Harold Logsdon declined to run again, seeking instead the state office of insurance commissioner next year.

For Post 3: incumbent Steve Boone, Kim Learnard, Robert Walsh.

For Post 4: Les Dyer, Vanessa Fleisch.

Because Haddix was in the middle of his four-year council term, he had to resign his Post 1 seat, which will also be on the ballot in November. Qualifying for the Post 1 seat starts Monday, Sept. 21 and ends at noon Wednesday, Sept. 23, city officials said.

So far, Eric Imker, Beth Pullias and Shelby Barker have announced their intentions to run for Haddix’s vacant post.

Fayetteville saw heavier qualifying traffic than in recent years, with all three incumbents set to face a challenger.

For Post 3: incumbent Walt White will face Patty Hawkins.

For Post 4: incumbent Larry Dell will face Mickey Edwards.

For Post 5: incumbent Paul Oddo will face Bill Dick.

And in Tyrone there was only one challenger for the two council seats. Former Planning Commission member Ken Matthews will square off against incumbent Post 3 Councilwoman Grace Caldwell.

3 female council persons and Cyndi for mayor! Even if Cyndi stubs her toe on the McMurrain big box vote next month, 3 ladies will be a refreshing change for city council.

Note to Tyrone: Ignore this advice in your election. Not all females are created equal. Valerie's Mom has to go.

Do you mean "women?"

Lady is an English title.

Logston is no gentleman either.

Precisely this brand of gender based bias is what led to the start of the political career of Kathy Cox. Here "Mudcat" references a clear preference for female candidates, eschewing an open-minded review of the remaining candidates.

As Kathy Cox entered the run-off against Dan Lakly for State Representative, she benefitted from being a low-key candidate in a race where the other two exchanged vitriol. The only other race in the sparsely attended August run-off was for County Commission. That race included Linda Wells. Wells had effectively leveraged female support through the Domestic Violence Council and was effective in "getting out the vote". While standing in the booth, Wells supporters cast their votes en masse for the unknown Kathy Cox, enabling her to defeat the late Dan Lakly by less than 100 votes.

I respectfully disagree, Mudcat.
