Fayetteville’s three city council races in November will be races indeed, while in Tyrone the political climate has calmed down compared to recent election cycles.

And in Peachtree City, eight residents qualified as expected for the mayor's post and two council seats.

In Fayetteville, Post 4 long-time incumbent Larry Dell is being opposed by 66 year-old Mickey Edwards. A Fayette County resident for 22 years, Edwards works in sales.

Post 5 first-term incumbent Paul Oddo will see competition from 69 year-old tax revenue agent Bill Dick who has lived in Fayette for 20 years.

Post 3 incumbent Walt White, another long-time councilman, will face challenger Patty Hawkins, 58, who has lived in the county for three years and is currently unemployed.

Though related by marriage to Post 4 challenger Mickey Edwards, Hawkins noted that she and Edwards are two distinctly different people who sometimes hold different views.

In Peachtree City, qualifying ended Friday afternoon for the Post 3 and 4 council seats along with 5he mayor’s spot. Following is a list of those who qualified by noon Friday:
For mayor: Don Haddix, Cyndi Plunkett, Scott Rowland.
For Post 3: Steve Boone, Kim Learnard, Robert Walsh.
For Post 4: Les Dyer, Vanessa Fleisch.

Because Haddix was in the middle of his four-year council term, he had to resign his post 1 seat, which will also be on the ballot in November. Qualifying for the Post 1 seat starts Monday, Sept. 21 and ends at noon Wednesday, Sept. 23, city officials said.

In Tyrone, the race for two council seats turned up only one challenger.

The challenger for the Post 3 seat held by Grace Caldwell is former Planning Commission member Ken Matthews. On his disclosure form the 45 year-old Matthews indicated he is a disabled veteran who has lived in Tyrone for seven years.

And in the Post 4 election Councilwoman Gloria Furr will have no opposition.

Related by marriage?? Iam talking about Edwards and Hawkins.
Nepotism!!! I don’t think there should be any type of nepotism in any type of government. Especially in a local city government!! In Fayetteville. I know they mean well, however you can not guarantee
me that they will not be together in voting, and have different views over important maters. This is wrong. These two need to get out of the race NOW!! This is not good for Fayetteville, Fayetteville as come a long way. Lets keep going in the right directions.

If you're so concerned, why didn't you qualify and run for office?

Or would you just rather complain about it?

From another news source - Hawkins residency in Fayette County

Patty Hawkins and Mickey Edwards are running for Posts 3 and 4, respectively.

Hawkins has lived in Fayetteville for three years, but has been a Fayette County resident for over 30.

Hawkins will run against Walt White in the Nov. 3 election.

“I think it’s time for a change, for fresh views and fresh ideas. I want to try to make and make difference,” explained Hawkins.

“I think I’m a great candidate because I’ve never run before, so I can offer a new perspective. Also, women can see things differently from men.”

Hawkins says one of her biggest causes is environmentalism.

She hopes that, if elected, she can create policies to make Fayetteville a greener city.
Edwards, a local salesman for NAPA Auto Parts, is running against Larry Dell on Nov. 4.

Edwards and his family have lived in Fayetteville for over 22 years.

He ran for Glenn Brewer’s Fayetteville City Council post two years ago and lost to Al Hovey-King by six votes.

Edwards, like Hawkins, says he is hoping to bring change to the Fayetteville City Council.
