Permission to hear the President's address?

jpopeye's picture

My goodness. There was a time when listening to the President was something akin to a required civics lesson. Politics has devolved our communities to the point where those who teach are afraid to present truth.

I am reminded of the debate over reciting the pledge in our classrooms.

What have we become?

Fayette schoolchildren will not be forced to watch. Parents can send a note to the teacher and they won't have to see it.

I would to watch the presidential address on Tuesday but unfortunately it conflicts with the Rock of Love marathon on VH1.

Regardless of how I feel politically. My kids will be going to school Tuesday. For one thing, they've both missed so much already being sick. Further, Obama has gall - that's for sure - but I don't believe that he would reach into the minds of our children to promote a leftist agenda. Just a little far fetched.

I trust that I am raising my children right and that a short speech by their President will not undo all that I have instilled in them.

Some have lost all trust in the Government.

Most have lost trust in their Government. Destroying Capitalism is not American!

When was the last time our government advocated personal responsibility for anything? The school system says Obama has 3 things to tell the kids. Fine, 1 sentence in 30 seconds should cover it.

I guess the other 15-20 minutes will be devoted to making sure the kids know the new Pledge of Allegiance to Obama. Heaven forbid our students should spend this time reading (we know our elected officials can't and won't read), writing or doing math (maybe they can figure out how deeply in debt they already are even though they are still in elementary school). A good civics lesson, reading the Constitution or memorizing the Bill of Rights would be a much better use of our kids time in school. Given Georgia and Fayette SAT scores our kids should have plenty of things work on.

Let's be fair. Fayette County's SAT scores are:

Among the tops in the nation

Georgia's tell us why they rank 47 out of 50 states.

All children need to hear the president encourage excellence in school!

Congratulations Fayette County!

In all fairness, what I gather is that some states only report the top percentage of SAT scores while others - like Georgia - report all SAT scores. This drives down the overall average. I remember that you once stated that you are a former educator (from California, right?), so maybe you can clarify if there is any validity to that argument.

Let's be honest. 2 schools (McIntosh and Starr's Mill) carry the water for our entire county.

If he was really concerned about excellence in schools he would approve the voucher and charter school systems for parents to move their kids to the best performing schools. Instead, he toes the union line for the NEA.

There is always room for improvement - but don't downplay the efforts and achievements of other Fayette County schools.

Other schools achieved

McIntosh’s score dropped seven points from last year, while Fayette County High’s went down by nine points. Fayette County High gained points in the verbal/reading and writing sections of the test, but dropped 15 points in math from 2008.

Yikes! Linking to that other paper which we'll call brand "X". Cal might come down and smite thee. Smiling

Anyways, I think of these comparisons between different Fayette County schools and for some reason I still remember "sniffles" and his "lesser" school comment.

I remember when I asked sniffy what his kid got at MacIntosh that my kid didn't get at FC, and all he could come up with was that he couldn't see what I was getting at. Well, what I was getting at was that while his kid's school might be getting higher scores, they weren't getting anything my kid wasn't getting.
