Dear Citizen,

Please give us a realistic report on the flu in Fayette County; as the bloggers have some information and too many rumors. I'm curious as a teacher friend of mine just called to tell me the number of cases sent home just yesterday at their school - WOW!

Also, are there places offering flu shots right now, like today? I know teachers are beginning to realize just how bad this flu season may be, and it would help if they knew where to get the shot.

Thanks, Jane

Seasonal flu vaccine available now

The vaccine for the annual seasonal influenza is now available at the Fayette County Health Department. The health department is located at the county complex at 140 Stonewall Avenue in Fayetteville and is open Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Call (770) 305-5416 to see if an appointment is needed. This vaccine is intended for the seasonal flu only and should not be confused with a swine flu vaccine.

We're on print deadline today but I know Ben will have a story on the flu situation with the schools.

Vaccine availability for H1N1 is slated for the end of October with November flu shots being the norm. It is likely that two shots will be required spaced thirty days apart to be fully immunized. Get your family doctor to prescribe Tamiflu or Relenza should you desire a "security blanket" and be advised that the virus has shown some resistance to Tamiflu.

Thanks for the info.

The September/October timeframe seemed to be what I got most places I contacted for the seasonal or H1N1; however, the flu is traveling far and quickly right now!

As for my teacher friend, found a doctor to go to this afternoon who has the flu shots.

I know that information, rumors and numbers sometimes get bigger each time you hear them; yet I must say I was taken aback when I heard the actual number of students sent home from one school.
