Cash for Clunkers another “well” run Government Program

S. Lindsey's picture

“After touting the ‘Cash for Clunkers’ program as a "runaway success" and "great for the environment," Friday’s CBS Early Show finally reported on problems with the plan as co-host Maggie Rodriguez declared: "And find out why the ‘Cash for Clunkers’ program could actually end up costing you long term."
Many Auto Dealers are now opting out of the program for lack of payment.. Less then 5% of the Dealers participating in the program have been paid.. Many of these Dealerships have as much or more than a MILLION dollars tied up in the programs..
Some Dealerships have said this has pushed them over the precipice and if they do not get paid soon they will have to close their doors.
Environmentally this has been a bust…
“"‘Cash for Clunkers’ is said to be environmentally friendly, but some are trashing the new government program....Recyclers say some salvaged car engines are still valuable. Instead, they’re being needlessly destroyed." One wonders why CBS did not highlight this criticism before the government spent another $2 billion on the program.

Brown went on to describe the car-destroying process: "Dealers are told to destroy the engine by replacing oil with sodium silicate and then running it....With the engine destroyed, many cars bypass the part recyclers and go straight to the salvage yards." The report featured the vice president of the Automotive Recylers Association, Michael Wilson: "We think a much more efficient program would have been to encourage recycled parts usage....All those parts that could have been reused will go right to a scrap processor” (Media Bias Researcher Center)

CBS admits Program SUCKS

One other little factoid here is the car itself is chipped up and sent to CHINA??!!?? So they can use the metal scrap to sell us more junk with our own money.. AGAIN.
Just one more Government Run Program brought to you by the folks that want to control your HEALTHCARE… Way to go Guys.. Great Job.. NOT

Yep, the car dealer that I bought my new truck from will not send the tag information to the state until they get their money from the "Guv". So I had to go and apply for another temp tag.

They sold about a half million cars by taking these clunkers! Good for the economy---the purpose of the program!

If the old clunkers had been resold as you suggest, it would have cut down on newer purchases helping the economy again.

Many of these cars are being stripped of spare parts which will fit some of the newer cars. They know which ones work.

That’s why I reply to you..

"They sold about a half million cars by taking these clunkers! Good for the economy---the purpose of the program!"

Uh No... We now have a half a million more people in DEBT that were not in debt before.. The cars that was traded in were paid for.. The odds of that person buying a new car instead of a used car was about 40% so we have traded a program for more debt.. That means they will have LESS disposable income every MONTH now for the next 5 YEARS.. Hurting the Economy not helping.. This was a GM and BANK bailout and not an American people bailout… AGAIN..

"If the old clunkers had been resold as you suggest, it would have cut down on newer purchases helping the economy again."

Uhh again NO.. Many of these cars are used as start up cars for students, 1st time buyers etc... Taking these off the market makes current cars more expensive and parts harder to find.. Thus creating a burden on a market that can hardly afford a $30k+ car.

"Many of these cars are being stripped of spare parts which will fit some of the newer cars. They know which ones work."

Uhhh..NO AGAIN.. Most of these cars are bypassing recyclers and going straight to scrap yards.. again creating a hardship on those that cannot afford a new car..

"We don't do steel anymore here. The Chinese and Japanese do!"

Uhhhh...WRONG again.. WE have steel mills through-out America.. Some of my best accounts are Steel Mills in Alabama.. Their ingot pricing is through the roof.. It would have helped our American market if this was used domestically. BTW why do we not have a thriving Industry in Steel in America.. THE US GOVERNMENT favored trade status with China..

The other problem with the clunkers program is that, however well intentioned the program might have been, it has actually hurt overall retail sales. Retail sales were at a low for July and not expected to be much better for August.

Many that were driving "clunkers" had no car payment. Now, the $20,000 + that was FINANCED does not actually feed the economy short term. Instead, those who are managing to hang on to their house despite recent job loss have now saddled themselves with a car payment. More debt. Haven't we learned by now that accruing debt is not the answer to saving the economy?

Better atick to your expertise: kids and Martinis.

I have at least three friends who traded in a clunker for a new vehicle---they paid cash! 3rd, 4th, or 5th farm cars!

You know not of what you speak. No welfare people bought a new car.

Assuming you are a taxpayer, how do you feel about your friends ripping off other taxpayers for that subsidy? And do you think that maybe they could have bought a new car sans any Govt assistance? Regardless, it's all indicative of the "me, me, my, my attitude", which just might sit well with you. Not me.

Submitted by Bonkers on Fri, 08/21/2009 - 6:03pm.

I don't get it!
You don't want people who are on welfare or poor to have a new car and you don't want people who save their money and pay cash to have a new car!

You talk foolish! What does "sit well" with you?

I think you simply hate Obama. He is getting needed things done.

I saw former a former republican Senator who sold a billion dollars worth of Hospital stock when he was a senator telling the democratic campaign leader, a doctor, that he traded one in and bought a foreign car!!!
The doctor said he was buying a GM car.

The purpose of the program is to assist the economy, and I guess P...-off republicans!

Submitted by AtHomeGym on Fri, 08/21/2009 - 8:45pm.

What you are absolutely right about is that "you don't "get it"---I never said anything about people on welfare or who were "poor" (whatever that means) and new cars What I'm not for is people making stupid decisions about spending money, either theirs or the Govt's. And I'm not for the Govt encouraging dumbos to dig themselves into a deeper hole! The program was ill-conceived and poorly executed. You go ahead and give me some factual justification for the program--if you can--word factual is critical.

1st: You have 3 friends? Hmmm....hard to imagine.

2nd: Do they still let you drive at your age?

3rd: Paid cash? Really? They must be some of those white teethed
rich people you talk about.

4th: Welfare people? Who said anything about welfare people?
Just in case you know not of THAT which you speak, there is a
broad group of citizens that fall within the spectrum between
rich and indigent - they are called WORKING CLASS. It is the
working class that suffers the most. The poor already receive
government aid and the rich don't need help.

Last: Your method of constantly trying to degrade me supports me even more. See, if you actually had a well informed rebuttal you would have said so. Instead, you must resort to your last line of defense - condescension.

Where did you get those smarts from. I concur. I'm waiting to see how fast the dealers get compensated now. I'm wondering if the gumament is now going to reimburse them for the expense of financing the cash flow spread until they actually get their money from Obama. And I wonder how many of these deals the dealer will get stuck with in the end without getting reimbursed.

Now that folks bought those vehicles what other home repairs, bill payments, etc will be delayed. And how many mortgage payments will not be made now?

Right you are sir. The people getting hosed right now are the responsible ones. Everything now is set up to reward poor decision making and irresponsible leaches. Like the NACA "event" held at the World Congress Center (I believe) recently. There was a definite target audience and I was not targeted. You had to be an "at-risk" homeowner. Certain lower levels of income paired with high levels of debt. If you lived above your means, bought way over your income, failed to pay your bills.....come on down!!! If you bought within your means, paid your bills, and had good credit history....don't bother. I went and looked at the website and tinkered around with the application tool. Even called my mortgage company. Not qualified.

I saw one guy on TV saying he had an ARM at 10% and they dropped it to 2%. What? Gotta love those ARMS. Also saw a woman in tears because they dropped her pay-ment from $1,598 per month to $798. What? They showed her house and there is no way it could cost that per month, without being re-fied about 10 times to suck out equity and buy more bling. Why in the world does anyone think people learn responsibilty when you constantly fix their screw-ups?

When I bought this house, I got my loan approved first and then went looking. I knew what price range I could live comfortably in. I got my approval back and was approved for $150,000 more than my price range. Did I get all crazy and buy what I was approved for? Hell no. But, I guess I should have. I could have then bought a fresh new ride, house bling, personal bling and lived the dream. Then I could have gotten bailed out and restarted the process again, including free healthcare. Change we can all believe in!!!

I get it from my mom and dad. Neither of them went to college and mom had me while in high school so didn't get to finish (back then schools would not allow students to attend that were 'showing').

All those years I spent in college and I never cease to be amazed by how much more my parents know about 'street smarts'. It does no good to know lots of stuff about ancient Rome, art history, Babylon, or English literature if you can't manage your own pocket book.

I remember my first apartment when I was 19. I took dad to go look at it with me and was warned that a top floor apartment with vaulted ceilings would eat me up with utilities, which were something I had neglected to budget. But....I wanted it. I had to take a semester off from school so that I could get a second job to pay my summer power bill. If only I had listened to the man with the street smarts!

That is the problem with many in my generation. They allow desire to guide finance and have the Scarlett O'Hara philosophy of: "Well, I'll think about that tomorrow.". Sadly, because they wanted more for their children than they had, the Baby Boomer generation failed to raise their kids with good ole fashioned STREET SMARTS.

You do have them sweetie. Your parents did well by you. Someone who doesn't blame other's for difficult times while expecting other's to provide for you, is a rare treasure these days. You are a true example of how my generation's children should have turned out.

Street smarts in it's purest form means common sense. Unfortunately street smarts is not a virtue that our leadership possess these days. They rule by their emotions and theories. Not by the wise use of street smarts. For what it is worth I commend you dear one.

And please don't let that nasty, vile, bitter and hateful Mr. Bonkers dissuade you from expressing your street smarts. Thanks for being such a wonderful and thoughtful poster.

I guess cash for clunkers ended early because I was late sending my last payment of nearly $4000. I mailed it on friday registered mail to the IRS. but since they don't work week-ends and MOBOMA is on another expensive unearned R&R noone will know they that they could have cut one more deal with my money. I am so sorry that one more person won't be in debt up to the eyeballs.Maybe next year somebody will organize another group of banks and finance companies to reduce the payments for these big spenders who couldn't afford 50 cents more a month. See you in the breadline if I get to live that long under Mo's healthcare. I'm already 62.

You will have to explain what 5% of what and what billion dollars you are talking about!
There is more than one bill.

Bush's trillion went to banks and insurance and car companies.

Obama's trillion isn't spent yet---just a little.

The clunker 3 billion is committed but not very much has been refunded yet to the dealers.
Some of the paperwork (titles, etc,) are messed up and there was a "rush" by the public to spend it--only took about 3-4 weeks to commit 3 billion.
Original estimate to spend it and take in 500,000 clunkers and sell 500,000 new ones was 2-4 months.
The dealers will get their money soon---ain't no way the banks or the government will let them lose it as long as they pay what they got for the cars they bought to sell. (and not stick it in their pocket.

Afraid trust is gone anymore.

and trying to follow your logic is giving me headache..

The program Bonkers clearly stated if they participated:
1. 24 hour acceptance of applications
2. Once accepted.. 10 day turn around on payment

It's not happening.. These guys not only float the $4500 they also float the Commissions paid to Sales.. they float the total cost of the purchase.. they float the sales tax.. etc.. they are not like George Soros with Billions. I have one dealership that has sold 162 cars under the program.. He has been paid for 2.. The Government owes him $720,000 dollars and it is now going over 25 days.. That just the Government share.. He also floated another $75,000 in Commissions and by months end will have to pay $75,000 in taxes on these cars they sold..
Could you if you owned a small business (he has 76 employees) float that kind of capital?!?

Point made.. Just another SCREWED up Government program.. and a FINE example of the "Law of Unintended Consquences"

Do you really expect any group to process 500,000 applications for a check for a clunker as soon as they get them?

People and dealers can not be trusted to submit the proper information. It must be checked.
They must know if it has a title, serial numbers must be checked, how long they have owned it, whether it meets the law criteria or not, and the dealers certification that he has disabled the vehicle!

Even then I'm sure crooks are at work to get checks that no vehicle exits for or doesn't meet the criteria--a totaled 2009 for instance but with a fake title.

Why are you using a very successful program that jammed the system as a bullet to throw at Obama?

They will get their money by next month. Anyway they got rid of 500,000 cars sitting on their lots that they were paying interest on!

What is your problem? Obama?

The point is that like everything else the government runs, it is screwed up. Not enough people to do the job, processes not in place, money just thrown at problems. And that is what will happen when health care gets "reformed".

Of course there will be crooks and fraud. How has the government done eliminating fraud in welfare, Medicaid, food stamps, Social Security, etc. etc. etc.??? The dealers sure don't call the program a success unless they are in the 2% who have been paid. The only ones who think it is a success are people like our friend Cy who got a fresh new ride. Oh, and the Obama sycophants like you.

Most Dealers actually buy their inventory.. They have in some cases Millions tied up in inventory most from business loans at a very high interest rate.. others "lease" out their inventory from the Mfg's but have to pay interest on their fleet back to the Mfgs. So moving their inventory does assist them...but not if the SELL it at at loss..
Right now there is discussion about IF they are going to be paid...

3 BILLION DOLLARS has been eaten through in one month
but less then 5% of that money has made it to the dealers..

Does your logic apply to Bush and Tarp/Deficits of course not.. This is Obama's tar baby soooo....
