Robbers fire at trailing citizen after Woolsey holdupTue, 08/18/2009 - 4:02pm
By: John Munford
Fayette County sheriff’s detectives are still investigating the armed robbery of the Chevron gas station in Woolsey Wednesday night after 9:15. Two armed black men, with their faces covered, left the store with an undisclosed amount of cash from the register, officials said. As the robbers got away, a citizen who was parked nearby saw them and pursued their vehicle as it went down Hampton Road and into Clayton County, officials said. Realizing they were followed, one of the robbers leaned out their moving getaway vehicle and fired several shots at the good samaritan, said Fayette County Sheriff Wayne Hannah. Despite the several rounds fired at him, the citizen continued his pursuit a while longer until the robbers eventually lost him on side roads in Clayton County, Hannah said. The getaway vehicle was described as a dark-colored Ford Explorer-type vehicle. Hannah said the zone officer who covers the Woolsey area normally tries to be nearby during closing time but was tied up with a suspicious person call and thus was not immediately available when the incident occurred. The first deputy got on the scene about five minutes after the call came in, Hannah said. Detectives were working with their counterparts in Clayton and Henry counties, particularly with gang specialists, to see if the suspects can be identified, Hannah said. The sheriff’s crime scene unit worked to collect evidence from the scene Wednesday night and went back Thursday morning to comb the area further, Hannah said. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Det. Ethon Harper at 770-716-4763. login to post comments |
