Residents in the Heritage subdivision off Ga. Highway 74 in Peachtree City woke up Saturday morning to find out a thief or thieves had been at work in the neighborhood.

Numerous items were stolen overnight from unlocked autos and open garages, police said. Among the stolen items were radios, money, a laptop computer, GPS units, an Ipod, wallets and alcohol, police said.

The incidents occurred between 10 p.m. and 9 a.m., police said.

Thieves will watch areas and target cars, homes and people who make themselves easy victims, police said. Residents should use avoid leaving packages, purses or valuables in their car, police said.

Police also are urging residents to take other precautions to discourage criminals, including:
• Keep vehicles and homes locked;
• Do not leave valuable items in vehicles; and
• Call the police if you see any suspicious activity, or hear suspicious noises.

Just a little response for several of you:

1) Yes, the victims did something incorrectly - not illegal. They thought we were still in a bubble and they should have locked their cars and garages. Take the 'victim' out of the triangle, you lessen or remove the ability for the crime to occur...sorry, we have bad guys in town.

2) Police parked in vehicle in parking lots with their a/c running. Ok, they are writing reports. Other options include the following:

a) Drive and write reports at the same time - eh, not such a great idea. Property damage who go up and citizens would be upset.

b) Go to the PD, turn car off, write report - eh, still not so good. This takes them off the street, lengthens response time etc. I will give you viable option tho.

c) MY PERSONAL FAV - park in parking lot. Turn car off. Write report. My goodness, it's only 92 degrees outside. So we lose a few officers to heat stroke. Not too bad.

I'll be sure to go up to Chief the next time I see him and say "we the people of Peachtree City believe that our officers should sit in their vehicles with no A/C and write reports. So we lose some - we can replace them. The jobless rate is through the roof!

GIVE ME A FREEKIN BREAK. YOU DON'T EVEN LIKE TO SEE A DOG IN A CAR WITH NO A/C. I WONDER HOW MANY CALLS WE HAVE TO CHECK ON DOGS ABOUT TO STROKE OUT IN CARS.

I truly think some people need to think through posts and let their brains guide their fingers. Regardless of the backlash I get from this post, I know that my brain is functioning.

Just how much report writing is done when two cop cars are sitting together talking?
They are usually sitting to catch a speeder only. Stop the excuses and tell the real reasons.
How many crooks will one see sitting at an intersection with nothing in sight to see except the road?
No one wants them to roast and you know that.
Always reasons for everything--more cops, more money, more, more.
Get another job if it is not liked.

Usually when Bonkie's fingers are in motion his brain is on idle or just not in gear. He is going to be against anything you say. If you would have castigated the police he would have been praising them. So, what if they are sitting to capture a speeder--we do have speed limits that need to be enforced. I don't know about you but I don't know any crooks so have no way of knowing how many "will one see sitting at an intersection with nothing in sight to see except the road?" Wonder how many times Bonkie has seen this and called the police? He does have extra powers you know--so maybe he does see crooks where you and I would only see another driver. Ah, if he would only use those powers for good! Wonder why he doesn't become a police officer, mayor, senator, or president because he knows just how it all should be done. Then, too, with all those other selves we would really get a bargain--hundreds to do the work, only one pay check. But knowing our Bonkie, he would want a paycheck for each one.

The criminals are nmot on the open highway and in the woods!

They are in shopping centers and neighboehoods, and at bars, red rooms, clubs houses etc.

You are doing the opposite of that which you acuse me!

Somebody told me that there were 15 home involved. Is this true? Doesn't anybody in this neighborhood own a dog?

Is anyone in that neighborhood suspected of owning a gun? Contrary to a popular line of thought, deterence does work.

To prevent a kid from taking stuff out of an unlocked car, the dog would have to be loose in the yard. A barking dog is as useless as a car alarm on my street...they bark when someone is out. They bark when the wind blows. They bark when a squirrel snores. Nobody pays attention besides to close the windows and wish the neighbors brought their dogs in at night.

My dogs don't bark much. So when they bark in the middle of the night, I check. Usually turns out to be a deer but I still check.

Well, duh! Why would you leave things in your car and leave it unlocked overnight? Even in your driveway, or why would you leave your garage door open?

Submitted by Insayn on Mon, 08/17/2009 - 9:08pm.

Because Peachtree City is a bubble and nothing EVER happens here.

probability: Its bored teens with too much time, no supervision and who's parents didn't teach them to keep their paws off other peoples stuff.

My take: If you don't lock your doors the police shouldn't investigate. People these days with take ANYTHING that's not nailed down. If you don't protect your stuff too bad so sad.

The attitude of some folks never ceases to amaze me.

I guess people should stop leaving their stuff in their homes because somebody might break in or stop carrying purses or wallets because they might be mugged or stop cashing their paychecks because they might get robbed or stop walking on the sidewalk because they might get ran over by a drunk driver.
The only people to blame when something gets stolen are the jacka**es who do the stealing. Yes, people can take precautions but if your own darn car is parked in your own darn driveway in front of your own darn home, you aren't doing anything wrong! What you need are more police patrols in your neighborhood and security cameras at your house to help catch these jacka**ses.

Submitted by Insayn on Tue, 08/18/2009 - 6:18pm.

I never said the victims were doing anything wrong. But I disagree with you on who's to blame. The victim is just as much to blame as the jerk who breaks into their cars/homes. Leaving anything unlocked is just asking to be victimized and, in truth, just ain't smart. Would you leave your car unlocked at Kroger? at the Airport? what makes your car in your driveway any different (safer) than sitting in a parking lot? The 50's are long gone and as I said people will take anything if its not nailed down.

As for Police patrols are you willing to pay more in taxes for more officers? They cant be everywhere at once and last time I checked there were almost 40,000 residents in PTC. Now start counting all those Clayton, Coweta, Meriweather, Fulton and other County tags everyone keeps complaining about and the number of people goes up.

But that's exactly what you are saying.

What you are implying is that the victims were wrong in not taking precautions.

Anyways, guess who will go to jail if prosecuted? (Hint, it will not be the victims.)

You're right....lets all stop referring to them as victims. I suggest the correct term to use should be "Easy Targets".

I tried to elicit some response with my alarm statement and amazingly no one bit..

We have a blame the victim mentally.. It's not poor Rufus or Johnny's fault. Society is to blame.. We made them do it..

I say set them up like baiting a dove field.. leave everything open at night with a light on the good stuff then popem as they go in for the kill.. Works for me.. Thinning the herd is always a good thing..

I'm afraid neighborhood patrols, especially at late night, are not being done well due to budget cuts for gas.

Sitting in a crossroads or at a shopping center with the a/c running is cheaper!
