Learnard to run for PTC Council post 3

Learnard, Kim_mug_for council Post 3

Another Peachtree City resident today announced intention of running for the Post 3 seat on City Council currently occupied by Steve Boone.

Kim Learnard, a workforce training consultant, said she is entering the race in part because she has a preference against large “big box” retail stores.

“I strongly disagree with big corporate chain stores proliferating in our town,” Learnard said in a news release. “Many of us moved here because Peachtree City did not have big box retail; this type of development is not in keeping with our quality of life. I believe that Peachtree City is a warm, caring community and that we do not want to become a big city that resembles every other big city.
Boone, Learnard noted, is a proponent of the larger “Class A” stores.

Learnard said she has learned over the summer that residents’ main concerns about the city relate to code enforcement issues, increased traffic and over-development. Also on that list is the budget issues the city has faced due to the economy, she said.

Learnard is a 10-year resident of Peachtree City. She said she plans to focus on “a more positive spirit in our city government” and “what made Peachtree City our hometown in the first place — services, amenities, education and, above all, families.”

Learnard will be in a three-person race as Boone has announced he will run for re-election and Robert Walsh, who lives in the Planterra Ridge subdivision with Boone, announced in May that he would run for Boone’s seat on council.

Mrs. Learnard wasn't at the meeting where the two ladies blistered the mayor and city council with their Powerpoint presentation on the city's irresponsible spending.

The theme for this year's election should be, "YOU CAN SPEND MORE THAN YOU TAKE IN STUPID!"

Those long letters in the paper this summer were really just the first step of a campaign for public office. They weren't really about healthcare at all. I must say that I am not surprised.
There is no way that I will vote for her. I've seen how she treats her neighbors. No, thank you.

Why do you call her that? Surely she wouldn't support Obamacare and try to run for office in a sensible (mostly) and conservative community like PTC. If she does support that abortion of a bill (yes abortion, hair transplants and tattoo removal are all covered under the House version of the bill) she's not a serious candidate.

Obviously anyone is better than Boone, but a whiny liberal - I don't think so.

I have to applaud Mrs. Learnard for trying to bring a "positive spirit" to our community. She looks so young and energetic and smart that she deserves a chance to be heard and I for one will give her that.

It was unfair to call her "Ms. Socialized", Mr. Cyclist, just because she has concerns about health as do I. I will suggest that I am probably a bigger consumer of health care than you are! I think her point was that health care is an important issue that deserves our attention. Wouldn't you agree that is a good starting point?

I will give you a chance young Kim !!!

Fondly,

Mrs. Fran Sheldon

Her tax and spend attitude on federal issues will trickle down to local decisions.

Cyndi Plunkett told a Rotary friend of mine that she's shocked to see Learnard poo poo the big box stores. Apparently, Learnard wrote a letter in the newspaper supporting Plunkett's position on more big box stores???

I'm afraid to think what would happen to our taxes with this one.

as the lady at a town meeting famously said - and she's right. If you care about health, eat right and exercise, if your concern is health care, get regular checkups - you can do all that without the government. If you believe for one minute that the bills currently being considered are about health care, you don't deserve to vote much less serve in a leadership position in PTC.

Socialized medicine in any form is idiotic. I hope Prezbo keeps pushing it into next year so the backlash in November is huge. Sensible people will prevail.

Difficult to do without insurance.

A full physical, only way to find everything, costs about 3-4,000 dollars including x-rays, labs, and use of hospital facilities.

A "check-up" is caused by lawyers, after an operation or treatment, to see if you still have the rash! Usually just a couple of hundred dollars. (half a weeks pay for many now.)

Submitted by Davids mom on Thu, 08/13/2009 - 9:25am.

Includes:
Wellness check; Lab work for blood; Office visit; Bone density check; (these are standard wellness checks for most women) If the patient is healthy - the cost could be under $300. If more tests or procedures are required, the cost could be more. A person with good insurance would have to pay the yearly deductible. A person without insurance would pay the total cost. In today’s economy, that is expensive.

Submitted by Spyglass on Thu, 08/13/2009 - 10:27am.

How many of the folks that won't pay the $300 bucks for a checkup have cable tv or cell phones with all the bells and whistles, or have newer cars with payments, etc..You have to have priorities.

Submitted by Bonkers on Thu, 08/13/2009 - 1:46pm.

$300 will just about cover a type 5 ofice checkup.

The rest will be about $2500 more. (x-rays, lab tests, use of facilities, medicines, bandages, aspirins, etc.)

Otherwise you get checked like ahorse is...look at the length of their teeth!

I have an acquaintance who is always whining about not being able to pay bills etc. Just she and hubby at home, military pension, both work, and he just started drawing SS.(63). They have direct TV with all bells and whistles, IPhones, both bought new cars this year--he a four wheel drive truck for camping in mountains! She buys new outfit for every function she attends including shoes, jewelry, the works. They go out to dinner at expensive restaurants at least 5-7 times a month. But won't get insurance because it is too expensive to pay difference after employee insurance (20%). Am I going to be paying for their insurance?? I am very frugal with my expenditures, basic cable, basic phone, eat out occasionally at less expensive venues--don't mind people seeing me in the same out-fit many times--I am beginning to wonder just why I worry about paying for my insurance etc, while all these other people end up getting everything for free. This is definitely not the same country I grew up in--you waited til you could afford something before buying it. Now every luxury is a necessity. God help us.

Submitted by bowser on Thu, 08/13/2009 - 2:23pm.

Your anecdote doesn't make sense. If these folks draw a military pension don't they also qualify for tricare? If they work, they are risking financial ruin to avoid premiums?

But anyway, assuming they really have no coverage, you ask if you would have to pay for their insurance.

The answer is twofold: 1. if they have no insurance you ALREADY subsidize their treatment of injuries or medical problems (which is at much higher cost if they use emergency rooms for things like strep, bronchitis etc). ERs must treat injured and sick uninsured people, and the cost eventually trickles down to the premiums and co-pays you and I pay.

and 2. Unless they qualify for Medicaid, which sounds unlikely, under any new plan I've heard about your acquaintences would have to BUY insurance.

Submitted by Bonkers on Thu, 08/13/2009 - 1:50pm.

You don't understand!
In order to keep our economy going we urge them to spend that much!

Then you see, everyone can enjoy life more.

Don't you think ATT wants us all to have a good phone, a good TV, and a good car?

I don't get your "insurance" statement.

As my buddy "hutch" would say " I calls them as I sees them" and from what she has advocated the title fits. BTW, I do agree there is problem with health care. But her idea, as several on this board have acknowledged along those in Washington DC are slowly realizing, is too costly.

PS, is your candidate criteria really "young" and "energetic"? You need to meet Bonker$ Smiling

I have taken care of it. It is in the vault! I have been counselled already. I am still worth seeing a doctor however and they don't plan to kill me soon! You....I don't know!!

Oh, by the way, The new health plan does require some money participation...it goes like this: if you make little you pay little, if you make lots you pay a set fee maximum.
Ever hear of that seance?

Now, Bonkers, is that any way for a good liberal to talk. How very malicious of you. You should be ashamed of yourself. Does it make you feel all warm inside to be such an ass?

Oh, by the way, it goes like this...our current taxing system is set up that very way. Those who make little - pay less. BUT, now here's the hard part to understand, those who make more - pay more! What a concept. In fact, they also pay more into welfare.
