The Fayetteville City Council Aug. 6 voted unanimously to approve an intergovernmental agreement between Fayette County and its municipalities for the renewal of the 1-cent sales tax that will go before voters in November.

If given the go-ahead by voters, Fayetteville would receive a maximum of nearly $6.8 million over the six-year collection period.

The city’s wish list is made up primarily of transportation-related projects and those involving multi-use paths and trails. The 14 projects identified by the council totaled $6,790,000. The plan also contains five alternate projects.

The list includes larger projects such as resurfacing city streets at $1 million, bicycle/pedestrian/multi-use improvements at $1.2 million, citywide grid/connectivity improvements at $1 million, Ga. Highway 85 medians at $750,000, citywide intersection improvements at $750,000 and the Ga. Highway 92 connector widening at $500,000.

Other proposed projects included a Ramah/Redwine roundabout at $400,000, a Church Street extension at $220,000, hospital area medians at $20,000, a trail at Dixon Park at $150,000, citywide park improvements at $100,000 and Pye Lake Park improvements at $200,000.

If passed by voters, the renewed 1-cent sales tax could generate a maximum of $135 million in collections. The sales tax on the November ballot will be good for six years rather than the customary five-year collection period, according to the intergovernmental agreement.

County projects that would benefit from passage of the initiative include $55 million to retire the debt on the Justice Center, $11 million for transportation, $5 million for initial construction of a college campus and $2 million for an Emergency Operations Center.

You have got to be kidding! How much money has already been spent on Pye Lake? Doesn't one of the council members live there? Something smells fishy here.
