Deadline near for qualifying for council seats in 3 citiesTue, 08/11/2009 - 3:58pm
By: John Munford
By JOHN MUNFORD and BEN NELMS It is nearing the time to put up or shut up, at least when it comes to running for elected office in Peachtree City, Fayetteville and Tyrone. Qualifying for the Nov. 3 municipal elections starts Monday, Aug. 31, and runs through Friday, Sept. 4, according to Georgia law. Voters in Peachtree City will be choosing candidates for at least three seats and perhaps four. Definitely up for grabs are the mayor’s spot, the Post 3 seat currently occupied by Steve Boone and the Post 4 seat currently held by Cyndi Plunkett. Plunkett has announced she will run for mayor, as has Post 1 Councilman Don Haddix. Upon qualifying Haddix must resign from his seat because he has more than two years remaining on that elected term. Haddix’s resignation would trigger a fourth opening on the council for voters to consider in November. A separate qualifying period would be held for Haddix’s Post 1 seat, city officials said. Qualifying in Peachtree City will start Aug. 31 at 8:30 a.m., continuing during regular 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. regular office hours through Thursday. Friday, the final day of qualifying, ends at 4:30 p.m. as provided by state law. The qualifying fee for the mayor’s seat is $270 and the fee for the council seats is $180. Fayetteville will have three council seats up for election in November. Those include Post 1, held by Walt White; Post 4, held by Larry Dell; and the Post 5 seat occupied by Paul Oddo. Qualifying at City Hall will run from Aug. 31 through Sept. 2 from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. The qualifying fee is $240. Qualifying for two town council seats in Tyrone begins Aug. 31 and ends Sept. 4 from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Qualifying will be for Post 3 held by Grace Caldwell and for Post 4 held by Gloria Furr. The qualifying fee is $144. login to post comments |
