PTC should allow carts on Hwy. 74 sidewalksTue, 07/28/2009 - 2:57pm

There was a letter in the paper today regarding some people being stopped and ticketed by the police for driving a golf cart along the “sidewalk” along Ga. Highway 74. This struck me as absolutely ridiculous. If it was indeed against the law, then the law needs to be changed. I have never seen pedestrians using the paths along Hwy. 74 since they were constructed. I have only seen bicycles and golf carts make use of them. What safer and more convenient place could there be to operate a golf cart? The path is plenty wide enough to accommodate golf carts, and is well off the roadway. I have lived in PTC for over 30 years, and I remember when the path along Hip Pocket Road was very narrow, and only suitable for walking because of it. It was eventually widened to accommodate golf carts due to public demand. It was, as I understand, one of the original paths when the city was designed and built, before golf carts became commonplace for personal transportation. All other subsequent paths were made wide enough to allow golf carts. When I first saw the “sidewalk” along Hwy 74, I thought it was a fine and much-needed improvement to allow easy access to The Avenue area by golf cart, or any other non-automobile means of transportation. I would never have dreamed that golf carts would not be allowed. I’m sure most other citizens are also unaware of this. It is not a personal issue to me, as I no longer use a golf cart, but it irritates me that something like this can be occurring. We don’t need signs to show that golf carts are not allowed, but the law, if in fact it exists, needs to be changed. Arthur F. Whittam Peachtree City, Ga. login to post comments |
