Remembered for significant improvements to sewer system

The Citizen has learned that the general manager of Peachtree City’s Water and Sewage Authority has died.

Larry Turner, who was due to retire at the end of this year, was recuperating from a shoulder replacement surgery at a hospital in Macon but developed complications some time after the procedure, which took place several weeks ago.

WASA member Mike Harman noted that Turner came on board 12 years ago when the city acquired a system that was in need of significant repair.

Through Turner’s expertise, the sewer system was repaired and upgraded to the point where it is now one of the best in Georgia, Harman noted.

“Everyone in Peachtree City was lucky to have Larry working for us,” Harman said.

With Turner’s retirement pending prior to his death, WASA has been in the process of identifying his replacement. The authority is holding a special called meeting Monday night at 6:30 to consider appointing Stephen M. Hogan as WASA’s new chief.

Hogan is currently a senior project engineer with the Henry County Water and Sewage Authority.

Before becoming a senior project engineer at Henry County, Hogan served there as a division manager for the water and sewer system’s capital improvement program and operations division. He served in that capacity for almost three years, managing a staff of 69 employees in four departments and managing the day-to-day operations.

Hogan has been with Henry County since October 2004.

Turner really turned WASA around with his management and was just a great guy all-around.

Besides being a good administrator, Larry was a consummate gentleman and always took time to answer any questions that one might ask about the operation at WASA. I was very sorry to learn of his retirement announcement a few weeks back and shocked to hear of his untimely passing. My sincerest condolences go out to the Turner family. Larry will certainly be missed.
