Peachtree City officials are reporting that 50 street signs have gone missing this summer, a practice being chalked up to summertime pranks.

In addition to costing money to replace, the theft of street signs can also become dangerous as emergency personnel may not be able to respond to a call if they can't find the correct address, officials said. Missing traffic signs such as stop signs also create a dangerous situation, officials contend.

The city is urging parents to speak with their teenagers about the potential harm and monetary cost the pranks have. It costs $55 in materials and labor to make and install each street sign, increasing to $165 per sign if the signpost has been damaged and must also be replaced, officials said.

Residents are urged to report missing signs and return any found signs to the public works department on McIntosh Trail, 770-487-5183 or online at www.peachtree-city.org under online services.
