Fewer choices for foodiesTue, 02/14/2006 - 3:53pm

As I drive the highways and byways of Fayette County looking for the next big find, I’m starting to become aware that the food landscape is starting to dramatically change. Not only are more ethnic restaurants starting to dot the landscape, but many restaurants are starting to close. Nowhere is that more evident than in Peachtree City. In the last few months, Ginza, Fuddrucker’s, Buckhead Brewery, On the Border and Philly Cheesesteak have closed their doors. Philly has been converted into a Quizno’s, but the rest of the buildings are empty. In Fayetteville. Ted’s Montana Grill has closed, while Scoops, next to Barnes and Noble is turning into Scooter’s, which will serve pizza. The Thai restaurant on Ga. Highway 54 heading towards Clayton County has also closed. What’s going on? Many are speculating that Delta’s financial woes are starting to trickle down to many of the businesses in Fayette County. When people are trying to cut costs, eating out is one of the first thing that gets eliminated from the family budget. Another theory is that the market may already be saturated with enough restaurants, but I don’t buy that theory. Fayette Countians have always supported a restaurant culture and usually cram a new restaurant full for the first few weeks its open. My theory is that Delta is pinching pennies, but also that many people are becoming far more discriminating in their dining decisions. More than half of the restaurants that have pulled up stakes in the county are chains, and i think people are starting to get tired of sameness. Last week, I went to La Hacienda in Fayetteville and the restaurant was packed. I knew the new restaurant syndrome is in place, but the food is some of the best Mexican I’ve had in quite some time. I’m hoping that we’ve turned the corner and seen the end of chain restaurants coming into the county for a while. With all the sudden vacancies, maybe some more independent restaurant folks will want to set up shop and offer the residents some better choices. login to post comments |
