Tipping point for tea partier: GMTue, 06/23/2009 - 3:35pm

I’m very concerned about the recent GM bankruptcy and its potential impact on the future of our country. The way the GM bankruptcy was handled sets a dangerous precedent, and threatens the security of all investments. Simply put, there is a clearly defined process that dictates how the assets of a bankrupt company are distributed, and the government-engineered “solution” has shattered that process. Bond holders should have been first in line to recover assets but instead were put behind the interest of the unions. When you tamper with the certainty of contract law, you threaten the entire stability of our economic system. Investment and risk are the cornerstones of capitalism; return on an investment is directly related to risk. High risk investments pay big rewards, but are the most likely to vanish overnight. Low risk investments pay smaller rewards, but are the most secure. For GM bondholders, that certainty was tossed on its head. Large pension plans were robbed of that guaranteed security, while lesser-positioned parties benefited beyond reason. We are now left to ponder just how secure any investment is. I have never spoken out in public, or been part of a political campaign, or carried a sign for any cause. I went to work, paid my taxes, and raised my family as best I could. But, even though I was a “good citizen,” I realized I was part of the problem. While I was busy with my life, my concerns, my dreams, I neglected to do my part as an American to ensure I pass to my children and grandchildren the America our forefathers handed to me. But not anymore. I had to act! Every day, more people reach their “tipping point.” For me, it was the GM bankruptcy, and the Supreme Court’s decision to pass on the case. On June 12, The Citizen ran an article about the upcoming July 4 tea party event at The Fred in Peachtree City from 4—5:30 p.m. I decided this was my opportunity to take a stand. There are tea parties, the Flat Tax movement, the 912project, the Intelligent Thinker’s movement — so many ways for people to get involved. I urge everyone to find a way to make your voice heard.
