Obama supporter defends his record

By: Letters to the ...

Recently Kim Carroll said she was compelled to write in response to a previous letter to the editor. I too find myself compelled – only it is in response to Ms. Carroll’s letter.

There are various things I must comment on, so I’ll just go down your letter, and give my viewpoint on some of your points.

You say all the various TV networks, newspapers and talk show hosts are compelled to “cheer-lead” President Obama, while denigrating President Bush.

Quite possibly this is due to the fact that with President Obama’s presidency comes hope for our country instead of the despair that was obvious across the nation when President Bush left office. I noticed you didn’t mention Rush, O’Reilly or Fox News – which all do a good bit of denigrating President Obama.

You say Obama is “hailed” when nominating ANY minority, yet the Republican Party is “raked over the coals” with nominees like Rice, Gonzales, Thomas, Palin and Steele.

EVERY person for every position who is nominated by any president is “raked over the coals.” That is the duty of Congress, to investigate all nominees prior to being confirmed. Ms. Sotomayer is no different. And she’s being “raked” just as much as any other.

A few points from your “short list”:

• Appealed the ban on partial birth abortion. The Freedom of Choice Act, which I’m assuming you are referring to, has not even crossed over President Obama’s desk. It was given to President Bush twice, by the 108th and 110th Congress and he sent it to committee to study. Nothing ever happened with it. A woman’s right to choose was put into law in 1973. No president has changed that law since then.

• Protecting terrorist’s rights. The Geneva Convention put into law that no person, at any time, has the right to torture another human being. President Obama is trying to uphold a law that the United States, as all other countries, is subject to.

• Tax burden on our children and grandchildren, and spending more money than any other president. H.R. 1424 – The Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP), under the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 and the Emergency Improvement and Extension Act of 2008 was signed into law by an act of Congress on Oct. 3, 2008 – under Bush’s watch. This was for a total of $700 billion. $247 billion of it was dispersed by the end of December 2008, leaving $453 billion at the start of 2009.

And, let’s not forget that we have been involved with the war in Iraq since March 2003 at a rate of $10 billion per month. That’s 75 months with a total of $750 billion – all approved by Bush.

• Speech in Turkey saying America is “no longer” a Christian nation. Here’s how the speech was actually worded: “One of the greatest strengths of the U.S. is we have a very large Christian population, but we do not consider ourselves a Christian nation, or a Jewish nation, or a Muslim nation. We consider ourselves a nation of citizens who are bound by ideals and a set of values.” (The President of the United States represents all citizens, not just one group.)

• “Greatest health care system in the world”? I’m not sure how you can even make that claim. You must be one of the lucky few that have a great insurance policy. I know many, many people – all typical middle class Americans – who are right now living without insurance because the costs are astronomical. And many more who are paying so much for their policies, their insurance is higher than the mortgages on their homes. There have been cases that these same people have been denied treatment because they did not have insurance or the means to pay prior to treatment.

By you saying we’ll have less qualified doctors would insinuate that presently the only reason Americans are in the medical field is for the income they earn, not for the well-being of their patients. I know people who live in Canada, England, Ireland and France. They all have government-run health insurance and are all very happy with their coverage and treatments.

• “Thousands” of earmarks in the stimulus bill: In searching for the earmarks online, I found reference through PolitiFacts.com that hosts a political “Truth Meter.” It says in regards to the stimulus bill: “The House and Senate stimulus bills have not been stuffed with hundreds of pet projects.” I’d be curious to hear what the thousands are that you refer to.

• Fired CEO with no authority: With the United States now owning 60 percent stock in GM, (Canada owning 12.5 percent, the United Auto Workers owning 17.5 percent) I’d say this administration had every right to ask him to step down. In the past four years GM has losses of over $82 billion.

• Refusal to participate in National Prayer Day – no other President has done this. President Obama did sign a proclamation declaring this a special day, but chose to pray in private. President Bush invited a prayer meeting to the White House all eight years he was in office. President Reagan held one once in 1982, President Bush Sr. held one once in 1989. No other president has hosted or participated in a public National Day of Prayer. President Obama said he was just bringing it back to the way it was prior to Bush’s administration.

And, just for the record, Barack Obama, IS the chosen one. He ran for the presidency and the majority voted for him, so therefore he was chosen by the American public. If those who did not vote for him don’t want him seen as “THE Chosen One,” then stop expecting him to act miraculous and give him more than the five months he’s been in office to try and get this country back in order.

Ms. Carroll, the next time you want to denigrate an American president, I suggest you put a little research into your accusations before you put them into print. Otherwise you just sound like a sore loser.

One final note. This is to Mr. Lucsko. You also referenced Pat Cochran’s article. And though I agree with you that political cartoons should be viewed as humor and should be allowed to run, I believe Ms. Cochran was most likely troubled by the fact that this newspaper has been running these cartoons against Mr. Obama pretty regularly since he’s been in office. I’d be curious to know how many consecutive comics were run during the first five months of Bush’s presidency, or any other president for that matter.

You say she was “unbelievable,” accusing her of calling everyone a bigot if they criticize this president. I did not read that in her letter. But I do remember, very clearly, people being called “unpatriotic” if they criticized Mr. Bush.

I believe I read right here in this column time and again how once in office, we should all stand behind our president, whether you voted for him or not.

But slow down a little - you might drown.

Obama did win the election because he encouraged millions of people to vote (or more correctly, register for the first time in their miserable lives and then vote) based upon an empty slogan of hope and change. No specifics except to grow government and create security for the underachievers in our society. His "Hope and Change" mantra also had a slightly hidden racial undertone which can be described as "Stick it to Whitey"

Smart campaign move, but the campaign is over - except for people like you who seem very defensive. Get over it Debbie, the man is an empty suit who thinks he's MLK in JFK's clothing.

He's overreaching with all these programs and he's not actually spent much money yet. It is scheduled to be spent in the future (about the time his reelection is scheduled, according to some). Which is good news. When the real citizens and voters in this country go out and vote in November of 2010 (17 short months from now) you will see half the House replaced and some key Senators retired - all because they lacked the courage to stand up to this community organizer who is trying to remake the entire country in his own image. BTW, the first-time voters from last time will not be coming out to vote this time or if they do they will be voting for "Hope and Change" from unemployment, high interest rates, non-existent credit and government-owned car companies. Even the union members (especially the unemployed ones) will part ways with Prezbo.

The real good news is that most of this spending is reversible by a Congress that will handcuff him during the last 2 years of his almost certain 1-term Presidency. The Rasmussen poll is very interesting and it gives us a preview of what the political climate will be during the mid-term elections. If (and this is a big if) the Republicans get a cohesive message and campaign together in favor of less spending, smaller government and possibly the Fair Tax - they can take back the country from these socialist goons.

Wow! 60%+ of Americans are not 'real' citizens. We'll see what November 2010 brings. You were way off - November 2008. This type of reasoning encourages even more to get out the vote!! 'Real' Americans are involved in reaching a consensus regarding our problems. The 'Just Say No' crowd does not appeal to the majority of Americans.

no way is osama my president. i don't agree with him on most things. the constitution says i don't have to. (oh thats right he has never read that) as soon as he steps up to the plate and answers all of the questions surrounding his birthplace and long form birth certificate maybe i will reconsider maybe not. What is he afraid of. Why doesn't he release his school records. maybe because he is not as smart as he would like us to believe. my Dad always told me to tell the truth so i wouldn't have to worry about what other people said about me. i would have the truth THE WHOLE TRUTH ON MY SIDE. we need to see and hear the WHOLE TRUTH IF HE HAS NOTHING TO HIDE.

He is considered/acknowledged as a constitutional scholar - a professor of Constitutional Law at the University of Chicago. You don't need to reconsider. My father also told me the truth - but needless to say, his 'truth' may have been tainted by unconditional love for his daughter. Obama is a citizen of the United States, has served his country as a US Senator. He has graduated from a prestigious and academically challenging college at the top of his class. You're right; it's your constitutional right not to agree with him for whatever reason you choose.

I will admit the truth----President Obama is partially a black man. A deadly sin.
What if his "long" birth certificate says he is Eskimo? Seems to be your only worry!
I'll bet he is not a born American! All such people ought to be hanged.
He doesn't worry much about what you or your Dad say about him!

In America many people in run or hide from the truth. Most all blacks voted for Obama because he is black and no other reason. Big deal, wouldn’t you? White Americans have a sympathy disorder in which we feel we have to take care of the poor and underprivileged. The poor and uneducated are the ones who hurt this country. Not the mentally challenged or physically disabled, the lazy poor. If you are a minority, you have many programs set up to help in so many ways for an education, even after screwing up high school. You get points for education and employment relevance preference. In taking a test which had 10 categories and scoring superior in all, I was told “I’m sorry you’re a white male. We need minorities”. Discrimination? Best qualified person for the job? HA, what a joke we have become. I will support good people as long as they put America first. Our success in leading the world in freedom of the people depends on setting aside the politics and sticking to real issues. We need ethics and a huge renovation of our judicial system.

most blacks support democrats anyway. Bush's approval rating among blacks was like, 9%. I'm not denying that the black community had interest in seeing one of their own get elected, but when has a racial minority candidate been nominated to a major political party in this country?

We will NOT stand behind this president who is hell bent on bringing this country to ruin.

He states that America should not butt into the Iran election debacle, yet he has the audacity to warn the leader of Israel about creating more settlements.

He has brought on more debt to this country than all previous U.S. presidents combined.

He stayed at a racist, marxist church for 20 years, and only left when he knew that his ticket to the White House was on the line.

This "President" has no backbone or morals, and we will NOT stand idley by while he destroys this great country.

These 'cousins' who reside in the Middle East have dishonored 'agreements' since biblical times. Here is a situation that requires top-level diplomacy - something the US has lacked for years. Now that we have progressed beyond bows and arrows - these ‘cousins’, if they continue in their present mode- will annihilate each other. I'm sharing two articles - one very recent; one written in 2002. No easy answer here - but proof positive that violence solves NOTHING.

WWII was the war to cease all wars - as was WWI. Nowhere in my statement did I say 'it' wasn't worth it! I too have lost relatives in war since the American Revolution! - but war continues. The Palestinians and Jewish people have been fighting and killing one another since biblical times. They now have the support of allies to assist them in annihilating one another. Is that a reasonable solution?

You are correct un-necessary violence is a useless waste of resources, however there are times you must stand up and fight.. When you are faced with someone that forces your hand choice goes out the window..

Rome defeated the Carthaginian army, killed or enslaved the populace, broke down the walls and buildings, and salted the earth. Violence solved the Carthaginian problem for the Romans

I have a problem with killing or enslaving an entire populace. I also feel that with today's ability to quickly erase a population from the face of the earth - we need to start using other means of solving problems. Not arguing - just expressing an opinion. I didn't want my grandchildren to experience war - and thank heavens my grandson survived Iraq and returned home whole and sane. Now I worry about my great-grandchildren. I've seen the veterans from WWII, the 'police actions' Korea, etc. - and the faces of the mothers and widows of those who were killed in these actions. Patriotism is wonderful - and defending ourselves is a necessity, I understand. I just feel that diplomacy and working HARD towards peaceful solutions must not be abandoned.

I just get irritated when people (which you didn't say, btw) that violence doesn't solve anything. Because it does most certainly. I am all for peaceful solutions, but sometimes a peace at any cost scenario becomes a call of weakness that will be exploited. It is a brutal world and humans are a brutal people by nature. I don't think that we will ever get beyond that in the long term. But it is good to give it our best efforts.

I lived in fear for years that the Russians would do to us what we did to the Japanese. Watching the atomic bomb tests; viewing the burned bodies of the Japanese; going through the drop drills at school - these are not pleasant memories. The Japanese learned a hard lesson of what greed and thirst for power could bring to a country. We have learned that we are not safe - when a band of 10 can kill 3000 Americans in New York City. I know it is considered 'pollyannish' - but someone, some group has to continue to work for peace on this earth. . and for the humans that inhabit this planet to learn to reside with one another peaceably.

Harry Truman himself would agree with everything you said David's Mom. But Japan was stubborn. Even before the atomic bombings, our Air Force had destroyed more than half of 28 of their cities. Hundrds of thousands already dead. They would not give in. And we calculated that without the bomb America would lose probably a million lives minimum (mostly Marines, including my father). Japan would not surrender after Hiroshima, when in one day more Japanese were lost than Americans in all of the Vietnam. Nagasaki--- they still would not surrender. 50,000 Japanese lost on that day. Emperor Hirohito wanted to surrender before Hiroshima but Tojo and the military blocked him and even tried to circuvent surrender orders after Nagasaki.

Cyclist is right. America demanded an end to Japanese terror in China, after the Rape of Nanking. We cut off their oil and steel. They attacked Pearl Harbor to (1) destroy the Pacific fleet and keep America out of their hair and (2) to get us to restore their resources.

David's Mom I agree we need to find a way apart from war. Two of the most successful Presidents last century did precisely that and they did it by having a strong military--- Eisenhower and Reagan. No one would mess with them. No war. Even Eisenhower the General warned of the military industrial complex. He was also the General who, upon discovering the Nazi death camps pushed every single human witness through there to insure that no one could ever deny this, the most horrific chapter of the violence of war. Being strong and being humane and not mutually exclusive.

However, when we see one country committing genocide on its own people, how can we justify standing by and doing nothing? The Balkans, Mogadishu, Iraq ---- these are troubling questions.

Question for David's Mom--- it is a really strange coincidence this comes up. I have been thinking for a while--- what would Dr. King (arguably one of the five greatest humans ever) had said after 9-11? I really wonder. Any ideas ?

Submitted by Davids mom on Thu, 06/25/2009 - 7:35am.

No argument with the reality of history.

what would Dr. King (arguably one of the five greatest humans ever) had said after 9-11? I really wonder. Any ideas ?
King and Ghandi persisted in the belief in the dream while recognizing the error that exists in reality. I believe that much has been accomplished in the journey to the dream. With all of our power and wealth - the reality of 9/11 is that the most powerful nation on earth is not protected from the error of war, hate or evil. Another great American effectively implemented 'Walk softly - but carry a big stick'. As we deal with the error in the world, countries that refuse to treat humans with respect - we should never take our vision away from the dream, IMO. Leverage in negotiations is a reality. King and Ghandi had leverage. . .without guns. There were guns to protect them. We can't justify standing by and doing nothing - Darfur, etc. The US is not the only country to profess the dream of human rights for all inhabitants of the planet - that is the dream of King and Ghandi. I think they would still be persistent in working towards the dream - which has not been achieved yet - in spite of 'leverage'.
We’re now faced with North Korea threatening Japan and Hawaii. The world-wide military complex will continue to flex it’s muscle – until we learn to solve our issues/egos by other means.

This is indeed a good discussion.. because it proves that the application of the threat of force holds back the aggressive natures of tyrants and dictators alike.
Russia.. ruled its minions for decades with an Iron Fist.. Threatening the use of force to keep them in line... We are seeing in Iran right now the use of fear and force to try to keep its people in line... There must be a countering force in the World. There must be a force to which repressed people can look to.. We are and always have been that force.
Granted it is in our nature to destroy ourselves, but overall the American people with its allies try to be beacon in the darkness..
A microcosm of this is the Police right here.. Without the threat of "violence" criminals would run wild.. Without, that is, Guns in the hands of law abiding citizens..
A plausible scenario.. In Mapleleafs world.. There are no Guns... The police quit or simply stop doing their job.. What do you think would happen?
There will always be predators.. Some are petty thieves, rapist, and murderers.. Some however preside over Governments.. They see themselves as appointed by God (Allah) or it is just their Destiny.. Whichever until we can somehow chemically neuter the aggressive tendencies of such people.. We have to be able to defend ourselves.. both personally and as a Nation.

I pray that my country - the United States of America - will not be seen as a 'predator'. There are aspects of our history that paints us as 'predators'. (Manifest Destiny). We have the leverage and the history of correcting predatory actions. Do we have the will to learn from our lessons - and use our power and wealth constructively - while maintaining our own freedom? I think so. I'm not a 'peacenik'- but I just don't want to give up on the 'dream'.

How to put Links in Posts

It's kind of a pain to do it here, but you'll get used to it if you do some.

Well, Mr. Bush and Mr. Reagan brought us to ruin (13 Trillion debt between the two) Also, weren't they both Epistols or something like that? Could have been worse and Pope worshipers!
I suggest that you stand "idly by."

....is people like Hannity and Rush, Coulter and Ingram. They spawn off minions like Garvin and PoRnmom who can't think for themselves and believe that they are fighting for what's right. In reality you people are furthering the division of our country and being anti American.

educating yourselves does not mean watching fox news or listening to the above mentioned hacks.

Holding differing opinions is "anti-American" these days? Glad to see that people on the left end of the political system are every bit as intolerant and ignorant as those on the far right side. I remember the howls from the left when they were criticized for opposing the Iraq invasion and Bush, and how some on the left said they were "better patriots" because dissension is one of the keys to the US political system. Well, it cuts both ways. People had every right to denounce all things Bush and talk radio and people who cannot stand Obama have the same right. To say that either is "anti-American" shows what a lack of history and a decent education brings about in a democracy. It's the "I can't refute your position so I'll break out some stupid slogan or label."

I think its stupid. Some in the left seem hellbent at getting back at the right... and now that they're in power some feel they should jump at any chance to throw a label that was once used on some of them. Its childish and divisive. Just take the high ground and don't use stupid terms like "Un-American", political discussion is better without it.

To truely educate yourself, don't you need to evaluate all information? If I ONLY LISTENED TO A PROSECUTING ATTORNEY IN A TRIAL AND THAT IS ALL I WAS ALLOWED TO HEAR IN EVALUATING A DECISION, you would be guilty. As long as they report what you want to hear makes it correct?

Listening to NPR.. Sirius Left..etc.. Watching the MS Media.. like the Love fest on ABC tonight..

We ALL believe we are fighting for what is RIGHT.. Flag.. we just have differing opinions.. time will tell who is correct.. The 2010 elections will let us know how America feels about the path Pelosi, Reid and Obama has put us on..

In my OPINION.. we are not on the RIGHT path for AMERICA.. the SPENDING the DEBT and the LOSS OF OUR CREDIT RATING - among other factors to me say we are going the wrong way.. Heck I could be wrong..
A DOUBLE DIDGIT unemployment rate may be good for us.. QUADRUPLING our debt may be GREAT.. Having China own most of the USA may be WONDERFUL..Not DRILLING for our own Oil and allowing other Countries to build Nuke Facilities while we put our hand out and HOPE for Wind to power our cars and Factories may be FANTASTIC for AMERICA, but I somehow still have my doubts.. But what the heck it's just my opinion.

"When the person who in possession of a government, shall say to a nation, I hold this power in 'contempt' of you, it signifies not on what authority he pretends to say it is..but an aggravation to a person in slavery"..Thomas Paine

and believe that they are fighting for what's right

Fred and many others on this board are fighting for what is right and no, they're not being anti-American. They're just as passionate about their views as the other side.
