‘Engaged’ Obama supporter has a rebuttalTue, 06/23/2009 - 3:32pm
By: Letters to the ...
Have you ever read a letter to the editor and afterward wondered, “What was the point of that?” I just had such a moment after reading Bill Webster’s June 16 letter. I believe there is a subtext at play. Mr. Webster’s main points are: 1. It takes years of research to know what kind of cars, mates, and meals we like. 2. It is valuable to use the communist-controlled Pravda as a reference for the state of the U.S. political climate. 3. 90 percent of Obama supporters did not know what he was going to change. 4. “We can do better.” 5. Our government is operating out of the “progressive playbook.” 6. “It is best to base our opinions on facts rather than feelings.” Does he not realize the presidential election of 2008 is over? Isn’t this letter a baker’s half-dozen months late? And, did he not “engage” McCain supporters in the pure interest of balance? The implication is that Bill Webster is much more informed than 90 percent of the President of The United States’ supporters. He would have to be to have any credibility in writing a letter on ignorant Obama supporters. And this is no easy task, being that the majority of Americans with bachelor’s and advanced degrees supported our president. But again, what’s the point, Bill? I’m on board with you that “We can do better.” We can do better than torturing human beings in our care and custody. We can do better than abandoning the valuable tool of diplomacy in deference to preemptive military force. We can do better than labeling sovereign nations “axis of evil,” thereby limiting the possibility of civil dialog with them. We can do better than flippantly singing “Bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran.” We can do better than name-calling political opponents and trying to play the “guilt by association” game. We can do better in bipartisan governance by appointing an unprecedented number of cabinet heads from the opposite political party. I haven’t found my “progressive handbook” yet, but I am willing to bet those changes are not on the front cover. SCHIP insuring 4 million more of our nation’s children is yet another change, along with the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. Bill is upset that President Obama won the White House. He is probably not happy that Republicans lost seven Senate seats, 21 House seats, and gained not one governor. My guess is Bill would rather say this is due to the ignorance of Obama supporters and has absolutely nothing to do with the GOP candidates’ abilities and demeanor during the 2008 election. Otherwise, you think Bill would have “engaged” a Palin ... I mean, McCain supporter or two. Whatever happened to taking responsibility for outcomes? A very skillful politician once said, “Own your failures.” Apparently, not everyone was listening. But, that’s just how I “feel.” Kevin King Peachtree City, Ga. login to post comments |
