Staff Sgt. John Beale of McDonough, who died in Afghanistan and was returned to his home soil this afternoon, got a hero's welcome from Fayette residents Thursday afternoon.

Hundreds of people, many waving American flags, lined the route. Sgt. Beale was escorted from Falcon Field in Peachtree City where his jet landed and through downtown Fayetteville on the way to McDonough.

Close friends and family welcomed Beale home in a ceremony on the apron at Falcon Field. Joining them were a host of law enforcement officers, local veterans and the Patriot Guard motorcycle escort crew.

Men, women and children, including many veterans, lined the procession route at different areas. Hands over their hearts or in salute, they paid tribute to an area man who died protecting our country.

SSgt John Beale – an American hero. Not just because he fought and died, but because he answered the call, stepped up and did his duty. How tragic to lose patriotic young men like Sgt Beale in the prime of life! But his loss cannot be minimized or trivialized or discounted. We owe him a debt we cannot repay. To his family, friends and comrades, I send sincere condolences. To the people of the Fayetteville and McDonough area, I say I am very proud of you – thank you for standing guard as John Beale was brought to his final resting place. Thank you for honoring him – you are wonderful citizens! OldGoat

God bless you Staff Sgt. John Beale. Your sacrifice affects not only the United States, but the whole world. Thank you very much.

I am a Canadian citizen who admires our big brother, The United States. This story and the video that accompany it show me that the America that I admire so much, still exists. The patriotism is truly awe inspiring.

Our fighting boys and yours are fighting for a just cause. God bless them all.

Thank you for your ultimate sacrifice for my freedom, Sgt. Beale!!! I am so proud to all of you who went out to pay your respects to this hero and his family. I would like to do more for the soldiers. If anyone has any ideas please respond!! My thoughts and prayers go out to this young man's family.

Your comments are absolutely on target, you just got the rank wrong. Sergeant Beale was a Staff Sergeant, not a Sergeant First Class. And just so you know, the proper term of address for a Sergeant of any grade/rank (except for First Sergeant or Sergeant Major) is "Sergeant". That's for Army.

Sgt. Beale's ultimate sacrifice and the recognition of that sacrifice by the citizens of Fayette County lend new meaning to the words "Thank you for your service".

My husband and I were at McDonough Rd.,just off the corner of Hgwy.54. We stood there with a very large flag and our open hearts. It made me feel so good to turn and see such a nice crowd to help show this young man and his family our support.I had chills all over and many tears as well.God Bless OUR Country and the men and women who protect and serve us.May they all come home safely and soon.

EVERY American should witness the coming home of a fallen soldier as a reminder that people like John Beale make it possible for us to go about our daily life in freedom. As I watched his plane land and the flag draped casket unloaded, I kept thinking to myself how many times this scene has played out over the course of American history and that the wheels were set in motion for Sgt Beale when his country was attacked on a tuesday morning in September 2001.

Thank you Citizen for doing your job in telling us about an opportunity to pay tribute to an American hero coming home.

I, along with my grandson, also joined the lines of people in Peachtree City as Sgt. John Beale was escorted from Falcon Field to his home soil. Watching this procession was something that will be etched in our minds forever. God Bless this soldier and God Bless our men and women that protect us and defend our country. Our prayers go out to Sgt. Beales family and all the others that have sacrificed their lives for us.

It was indeed a humbling and sad experience to watch Sgt. Beale's procession go by. I was honored to have been able to witness this event. Heck... I even had to wipe some some man sweat out of my eyes. Seeing the flag draped coffin in the hearse carrying the remains of this fallen hero is an image I think will be etched in my mind forever. Thanks Sgt. Beale. I hope the crowds that came out are an encouragement to all the men and women who serve. I somehow hope they can sense the true appreciation for what they do for us.

Our love, prayers and thoughts go out to your family Sgt. John Beale and you fellow fallen and wounded comrades.
