Firecrackers and Libraries

I don't really know the bottom line cost of the firecracker show--I have heard $25,000, but don't know if that includes set-up/clean-up, etc.

Now, why would we spend several million dollars on a library on a prime piece of land in order to reduce the hours when people really need it?
Keep in mind that the library is 100% for the use of patrons and has nothing to do with jobs!

Budgeted are:
Concert supplies: $4,000
Fireworks: 26,000
Barricades: 2,000

Employee work is handled through scheduling to be available. KPTCB does a lot of clean up and are all volunteers.

Income is generated for city businesses, etc, on the 4th. From them the city collects sales tax and such due to these activities.

So, trying to give a bottom line net is impossible.

I heard no proposal from Staff to cancel the fireworks. When brought up at a Workshop by a citizen no one on Council backed the idea and other citizens there were opposed to the idea.

Emails and personal contact on the issue were overwhelmingly quite strong to keep the fireworks when word got out it was even mentioned.

Whoever told you $25K was wrong; the 4th of July activities are much more than that. Especially when you start factoring in additional police manpower, equipment use and/or their rental as well as city employee/contractor efforts for set-up/clean-up.

Of course they do make some of that back on DUIs and citations for open container and public intox.

Email Councilman Haddix; I'm sure he can give you a figure for the last few years.

versus the benefits. The hotels/restaurants benefit from the 4th of July weekend goings on too. Put me down as a PTC Citizen that was squarely in favor of keeping the fireworks.

I talked with a well placed individual at city hall and the cost of the Fireworks alone is 30,000.00 dollars. This individual also said that they had suggested that we don't hold the fireworks this year as the City is BROKE, but OL Harold said NO WAY he was going to have them anyway. What I would like to know is who is going to clean up the mess left by all of the out of towners that come to OUR City and use OUR facilities and trash the place out (it's not like they come and spend a ton of money while their here). Ol Harold fired all of the people that used to clean the place up, whats he going to do now, get True Green to send some illegals out to clean up, hum? Secret Squirrel you know your avatar could do a better job than Ol Harold.

Was it his choice alone, or the 5 votes on the Council? You seem to think Harold is the King of PTC.

And put me down for one who was in favor of the fireworks...in fact, I was in favor of a slight tax increase to keep the 23 employees we let go that did the landscaping.
