PTC wants input on library hours

In light of its reduced operating hours that began in January with budget cuts, the Peachtree City Library is currently conducting a survey on its operating hours.

The surveys can be filled out in person at the library or online at www.peachtree-city.org/librarysurvey

Due to city budget cuts, the library shortened its hours in January from 68 hours per week to 56 hours a week. The library now opens an hour later at 10 a.m. and closes an hour earlier at 8 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. Wednesday hours are limited to noon to 6 p.m.

“The two biggest concerns we hear from patrons are the limited Wednesday hours and the earlier 8 p.m. closings on week nights, especially from parents of local students,” said Jill Prouty, Library Administrator. “While we can’t resume operation at 68 hours a week, we do think we need input from the public before considering any more changes in the schedule.”

At the April 4, 2009, City Council meeting, Council Member Cyndi Plunkett suggested closing all day on Wednesdays and going back to the old hours the rest of the week, i.e., 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Plunkett felt that students needed the later hours and that it might be easier for people to remember the schedule.

Prouty offered another alternative – seasonal hours. The idea is that the library would open and close earlier during the summer when school was out, and would open and close later during the school year to better accommodate students in the evenings.

The survey will run through Wednesday, June 17. Results will be reported to City Council at their June 18 meeting. Library users can take the survey in person at the library or online at www.peachtree-city.org/librarysurvey

The day the Mayor and Council decided it was more important to spend big bucks on a fireworks display in lieu of keeping the our library open during regular, year-round hours, was the day we put pomp and fluff over education and common sense.

That is all that is required here. The council is trying to repair the damage to the city that they have spent the last several years systematically destroying. How about they all get out and let someone - anyone - give it a try!

Will you please send this economic epiphany to Obama?

Thanks.
