Obama Justice Department Decision Will Allow Non-Citizens to Register to Vote in Georgia

“The decision by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to deny preclearance of Georgia’s already implemented citizenship verification process shows a shocking disregard for the integrity of our elections. With this decision, DOJ has now barred Georgia from continuing the citizenship verification program that DOJ lawyers helped to craft. DOJ’s decision also nullifies the orders of two federal courts directing Georgia to implement the procedure for the 2008 general election. The decision comes seven months after Georgia requested an expedited review of the preclearance submission.

“DOJ has thrown open the door for activist organizations such as ACORN to register non-citizens to vote in Georgia’s elections, and the state has no ability to verify an applicant’s citizenship status or whether the individual even exists. DOJ completely disregarded Georgia’s obvious and direct interest in preventing non-citizens from voting, instead siding with the ACLU and MALDEF. Clearly, politics took priority over common sense and good public policy.

More change that ACORN can believe in!!

What is the argument for thinking that voter verification is discriminatory? Usually, I can at least get in stride with an opposing view enough to understand how someone might think it reasonable. But this one just strikes me as plain nuts.

There's nothing to stop the State from developing a non-discriminatory way to check citizenship for voter registration. The State was using SSI and driver's licenses to purge registration list resulting in the citizens having, in some cases, to file law suits against the State to reinstitute their right to vote. The whole issue is an attempt to suppress minority votes, The practice was so egregious that even Alberto Gonzales objected and when he intervened the State under Cathy Cox, refused to make available the voters list resulting in a Gonzales DOJ suit against the State forcing Cox to provide the list:

CONSENT JUDGMENT AND DECREE

In places like East Timor, Togo and Venezuela every citizen is automatically registered and several months before the election the voter registration list is made public. Citizens are sent a verification letter which they must present at the polling place along with ID. All of this is highly publicized and if you don't receive your voter authorization letter there is time before the election to correct it.

In the case of Georgia, if you got married and changed your name (so that it then didn't match the SSI registration), or if you moved (so that your address didn't match your driver's license) you were purged. This affected minorities 60% more than whites and Hispanics 50% more and was ruled discriminatory.

Georgia and the Republican Party have a long and rich history of trying to suppress votes by minorities and Hispanics. Perdue is now backing a bill trying to require proof of citizenship at the polling place, SB56 I think. It will be struck down by the DOJ as sure as the sun rises in the East.

Why not develop a database of Ga. citizens and register them? Because the R's are horrified at everybody being registered. Why is the voting list secret? Why were 200,000 flagged weeks before the election?

Register everybody automatically, contact them before the election to verify the information is correct, provide photo ID for those that don't have it then require the verification letter and photo ID to vote. Problem solved. If East Timor and Togo can do it why can't Georgia? They could if they wanted to. The Republican Party won't allow it. They don't want minorities and Hispanics to vote.

Here is the basic question: why is the registered voter list not public?

JeffC this has been a game of gotcha and vote generation for 175 years. Can any party truly claim to have an ideal concerning this? Vote generation from recent immigrants, voter intimidation, and voter manipulation have been in play in almost every precinct historically. Tammany made a great machine out of this in the wards of New York. The Democrats play for a fast and loose election roll because it has historically worked well for them in democratic bastions such as New York and Chicago. Why did Gore cherry pick on 4 Florida counties to have a recount in 2000? It was because that is where the most votes could "turn up". Heavier population, more opportunity for graft. Minnesota played out similarly, but for the democratic advantage in 2008. Vote boxes magically reappear, are misplaced, or are double counted. Republicans generally try to make voter generation (or creation) harder to do because it generally happens in urban areas, with heavy immigrant and illegal populations, who generally are for government spending and entitlements-strong Democratic ideals. But seriously, after reviewing the voter logs from groups such as Acorn- with people such as Brett Farve suddenly becoming registered voters in both Ohio and Nevada (in addition to MS and WI) are you going to suggest that Democrats are cloaked in righteousness?

Thanks. I'll chew on that for a while.

But I wonder about this:

This affected minorities 60% more than whites and Hispanics 50% more and was ruled discriminatory.

Two questions/comments:

(1) Why did this affect minorities significantly more than whites?

(2) All else equal, I do not see that the conclusion that the policy is discriminatory, in either intention or consequence, follows--at least not by default. (This reminds me of arguments that have arisen at times in the context of academia. An institution may hold, say, high and fixed admission standards, and it is discovered that members of some group are significantly less likely to meet the criteria. Are the standards thus discriminatory?)

Help Karen Handel Stop Non-Citizens from Voting in Georgia

In another blatantly political move by the Obama administration, the U.S. Department of Justice recently ordered Georgia to stop the process of verifying voter registrations. This is the same process upheld by two court rulings, which was required by the Help America Vote Act.

Not only does this prevent Georgia from verifying that voters are indeed U.S. Citizens, but it prevents the State from verifying that the voter even exists! Now non-citizens and dead people can legally vote!

In response to this ruling, Secretary of State Karen Handel issued a statement saying, "It is a sad day for the rights of our state and for the integrity of our elections. I remain committed to continuing the fight for citizenship verification. In the coming days, I will consider every option available to the state, including the possibility of legal action."

As part of this fight, Karen has drafted a "Free and Fair Elections" petition. Join the fight to stop illegal aliens and non-citizens from voting by signing the petition now.

Those that say that there is no need to verify an applicant is not eligible to vote because that act is against the law should look what happen to former Congressman Bob Dornan AKA "B1 Bob". He lost his election in 1996 by 979 votes. A recount found that 624 of those votes came from non-citizens and another 124 were thrown out. But hey, do you think the non-citizens were ever brought to trial. Heck they could not be found. ID everyone!!! You have to do it to get on a flight.

Question for you? Are we a muslim nation? Our president just said so. He also said we are not a Christian nation. Well... if the Christians in this country WAY outnumber the muslims in this country then how can we be a muslim country and not a Christian country?

I just don't understand you librul people's math. Hmmmm.. no wonder I can't understand how pissing away hundreds of billions of dollars on propping up the least productive businesses, financial institutions, and people in this country is going to strengthen our foundations. They aren't are they? Eye-wink

But it doesn't matter to you does it? Just mock my post and make fun of the daily news issues Fred posts rather than refuting intelligently each story. Me is beginning to think the real issue here is that you can't. After hearing you guys chant We Can, We Can over and over I think it's starting to dawn on you characters that you really can't.

Hmmmm... Listening to the Democrats scold the GOP over the last few years was acceptable in my books. Knowing deep down that their scolds were mere 'Read My Lips' moments has been sooooooo prophetic. One thing about the Dems...... when you guys one-up the Repubs you most certainly know how to put them to shame.

All the illegals, dead people and felons can finally vote and vote more than once too. Yes. We can be just like Chicago only bigger. For those who don't know - in Chicago the criminal types like to look in the obituary section of the paper because those who recently died will still be on the voter roles. The they just say they/you are them and say you have no I.D.. See how fun and easy?

You can repeat this criminal process as often as you wish and vote as many times as the Community Organizers will pay you to and usually they will even drive you to and fro!

Heck, you can even register as the entire offense of the Dallas Cowboys did ... and vote.

Maybe we can get the 'New' Black Panther Party with 'Billy Clubs' to stand in front of our polling places and call people racist names like they did in Philly!

Come on people lighten up....it's only voting for our elected officials and the direction of our country.

Heck in some districts in Minnesota more people voted than are even alive much less registered and they went on to certify that election with a 225 vote margin!

We are really moving forward now..... we are joining the likes of Chicago and Minnesota in our inability to hold an honest and accurate vote.

And I know you are a member of the Citizen.com "rat pack" who like to call people names when they don't agree with you...so have at it. I don't care. BTW..It isn't "Yes We Can" anymore...It's "Yes We Did." Now, you may continue your madness or your obsession with President Obama, yours and Fred Garvin's favorite word. According to you everyone has the obsession sickness, except you and he.

Keep your postings current and make sure that at least some of it is true...The things you blah, blah, blah about are what the American people didn't buy (NOVEMBER 4). Remember?

As for the "New Black Panther Party"? Do you want to join or something? You should apply...they may take you. You might have more in common with them than you think.

All people of Hispanic heredity are not "illegal". The mere fact that you are unaware of this shows your level of ignorance and lack of multicultural awareness. (In other words - you aren't even a good liberal.)

No, I don't want to join the Black Panther Party or I already would have. I wasn't aware that you were in charge of membership for the local wanna-be-chapter. What I actually want is to see you serving them cookies and grape kool-aid in an apron with a bow in your hair. And kneeling at their feet until they send you on your next errand.

Which brings us to three things:

1) Learn to spell my name if you want to call me out.

2) Have something to say with some relevance to the topic of the thread.

3) Care to argue any political points in any of my dozens of posts because this little name calling exchange is for the mentally bankrupt and politically ignorant like you but the topics I have posted are meant to be commented on by the intellectually astute like me.

I'm not a racist bigot. You did exactly what I said you would. You called me names. Here's the mirror...look in it....what do you see? If I had a level of ignorance it couldn't hold a candle to yours. If what you say and do here is called multicultural awareness....I'll pass on that.

I like cookies....I don't drink kool-aid (too sweet)...my husband may like the bow and apron idea, but we won't go there. Kneeling to anyone isn't an option for me, sorry.

Which brings us to three things:

1) I purposely left the "R" from your name.

2) Everything I said pertained to your blog above.

3) I never argue with anyone. I actually like hearing different sides of all topics, when they are based on truth and when people can agree to disagree without becoming mean, ugly and vicious. I think it is possible to do so. I am open to opinions that make sense. I didn't call you a name, but you in your response called me, racist, bigot, ignorant, mentally bankrupt, and suggested that I should wear bows and an apron kneeling at the feet of the Black Panthers (to run their errands??). No joke and I would never ever make fun of the how any nationality speaks and I wouldn't want it done to me either. I have read posts here that poked fun at the graduates who spoke at the HS ceremonies in Fayette County, calling them "ebonic." I asked the question of that poster, "who speaks like that"? I knew I wouldn't get an answer and I didn't. I left it alone.
I am a minority twice over. But I can tell by reading his post's what would ignite JM's rant against me. Something as simple as leaving the "R" out of his name. he feels so superior here in blogsville.

He may not have remembered me from last week, being so engrossed in himself, but I commented on some of the scary and hate filled things that were being posted and he preceded to put my name in big bold letters and belittle me as a (in his words) "nutcase." Just because of my comment. Give me a break.

I wouldn't have changed anything in my post. I said what I wanted to say as he did and without personally insulting him. Now...I hope I answered your curiosity (not that I really had to explain myself) and you are correct...I am very enlightened as to what is good for the goose is definitely good for the gander and MONKEY's don't count.
