Where was liberal outrage over Bush cartoons?Tue, 06/02/2009 - 2:58pm
By: Letters to the ...
In reply to the letter from Pat Cochran in the Wednesday, May 27, 2009 edition: Keeping the question as to whether President Obama’s leadership is “outstanding” for another time, I find it amusing and frightening that Ms. Cochran wants editorial cartoons of President Obama stopped because she doesn’t like them. How arrogant, how naive and how uninformed. Political cartoons have a long history in this country and have always been used to tweak those in power with caricature and pointed humor. Ms. Cochran, were you upset with the portrayals of President Bush for eight years? How about Presidents Clinton, Reagan, Carter, etc.? I think you, Ms. Cochran, tip your hand by saying the cartoons shows “one-sidedness and bigotry.” And there it is in a nutshell. If you criticize this president, you are a bigot. Unbelievable! Stop the dialog, stop the questioning and follow sheepishly: A recipe for disaster. Ms. Cochran, I say to you the same thing I say to anyone regardless of where they stand in the political spectrum: Read everything on every side of an issue, even if it makes you angry. Just because you agree with or like the guy in power doesn’t mean we should stop asking questions. Ms. Cochran, if political cartoons are suppressed because some segment of the population finds them unacceptable, your ability to write and complain about them, and my ability to call you on it will also be suppressed. Pretty chilling, isn’t it? Danny Lucsko Peachtree City, Ga. login to post comments |
