PTC, Fayette to get little stimulus for roads

Peachtree City’s high median income is again hitting the city in its pocketbook.

The city is basically ineligible for many grants and other federal funding because the median income is so high. While that’s not the case for transportation funding from the federal stimulus package, the city is likely to see pennies compared to other jurisdictions.

That’s because the stimulus transportation funding distirbutoin formula takes into account median household income and population, City Engineer David Borkowski said in a recent City Council meeting.

Fayette has one of the lower populations and the highest median incomes in metro Atlanta. For purposes of the stimulus transportation funding, that means Fayette County will get $1.1 million of the remaining $27.1 million to be dispsersed through the Atlanta Regional Commission.

The city is working toward identifying projects that are “shovel-ready” or can be at that stage quickly to meet stimulus funding criteria, said City Manager Bernie McMullen.

The catch is that to get to “shovel ready” status the city has to jump through all the paperwork and engineering hoops it had to for the languishing cart path bridge over Ga. Highway 54 West at the CSX railroad tracks. That paperwork and engineering criteria were blamed as the chief reason the bridge connections remain undone today, leaving the bridge and a tunnel under the highway completely unused.

The city is trying to get federal stimulus funding for the repaving of Dividend Drive, McMullen said. Dividend Drive is the main road through the city’s industrial park.

Wait till the bill comes due in the form of taxes for this so called " Stimulus Package ".. Given the numbers we've seenm it did little to get the economy moving forward. Good news it, that it didnt delay the expected recovery in 2010 some expects say... Unemployment i expected to hit the high mak by the first quarter of 2010, the a slow steady rebound to start in the latter[part of the second quarter.
