Perceived Racism Linked To Weight Gain

And I thought the whole time it was because they refused to participate in that motivation / diet and exercise concept. There goes that concept of actually getting up off that fat a$$ and stop feeling sorry for themselves, and actually trying to improve one's self image, health, and plight. I suppose that concept will have to be put on the back burner as they ponder their newly discovered excuse over a diet coke and a box of Little Debbie's.

Hmmmmmm..... with all the reverse discrimination going on these days it is no wonder we're seeing a huge jump in zaftig white women.

At least as a result of this remarkable study we can now refocus and redirect healthcare funding for obesity to preferential government subsidies to tank sized black women so they can overcome this terrible affliction. Hmmmmm... invest in the future by bettering ourselves or buy up another couple king sized bags of Doritos?

Seriously.... what excuse will they make for all fat white women out there? If these two problems can be solved imagine how good for the environment it will be when these cows can actually pick up their feet instead of shuffling over to the refrigerator for a huge glass of whole milk and the other half of that bag of Oreos. The landfills will cease being filled with discarded fuzzy bedroom slippers with holes worn in the bottom of them.

Sorry, but I'm just not buying this study... who pays for these "studies" anyway?

I would think that anyone, black/white/brown/pink, who is obese would feel discriminated against in some way because of their huge size, especially in a public setting like in a restaurant, plane, grocery store, etc. Most likely, the obese people are being treated differently because of their size, not the color of their skin. That's really a stretch to try and correlate obesity and racism but I do think that obese people probably feel very different and bad about themselves and may end up blaming others for their plight.

If people (white or black) don't want to feel discriminated against because of their size then they really need to take responsibility for their actions and stop eating like this....LINK ..... or like this.....LINK

...I'm just sayin'

That picture reminds me of our lunch this afternoon. Huge portions eh? I was really relieved that you didn't create a scene when they asked that you put a shirt on before you entered the Broadway Diner.

I like Main's analogy and think that it can be applied to so many other issues. Employment, prejudice, financial situation, many health issues, etc... Hmmm the concept of personal responsibility and dealing with the consequences are not entirely lost on our friends on the left afterall. Eye-wink Great points Main.

This reminds me of a time when I was about 18 or 19. I was working for the Public Works Dept. in Lighthouse Point, FL, picking up yard trash. Someone threw away a Chinese ming in a planter, and I decided that I wanted it. I was riding my 10 speed 4 or 5 miles to work every day, so, at the end of the day, I was pedaling home carrying this plant in my arm. A Broward County deputy pulled me over to inspect the plant. From a distance it really looked like pot. This guy actually thought that I might have been cruising down Sample Road in the middle of the day on a bicycle with my arm around a 2 foot pot plant. I laughed at him. It ticked him off, but he had to let me go.

What he didn't know was that I was growing some pretty good plants--that were not Chinese ming--at my home just a few blocks away.

In another life and another land long, long, long ago there lived this friend who planted some pot seeds and sprouted them in about eight clay pots. They had grown a several inches high before he put them on the balcony of his apartment to get a little sunlight. My friend left for several weeks for a 'tour of duty' associated with his job. Upon returning and being dropped off at his place it was noticed by all his co-workers that there was a very established crop of 18 - 20 inch plants lined up along his balcony. Needless to say and thankfully the dreaded knock on the door never transpired.

In defense of 'my friend' I'm quite certain that he never inhaled.

Of course if you are economicaly prisoned you would get sad and sick and overweight. Isn't that obvious. Further proof that your racism is killing this country.

Just more illegitimate ammo for the folks who attend the church of perpetual victimhood - it's always someone elses fault, don't you know.

Heck, if I over ate every time that I "felt as if I was treated poorly in a restaurant or store, whether I thought people considered me dishonest or less intelligent, and if I had felt unfairness on the job, in housing, or from police," then I would weigh 750 lbs by now.

Oprah must be subject to mood swings regarding her perception of racism.

On the face of it, that is a ridiculous study. They find a correlation between obesity and perceived racism and conclude that the latter is a causal determinant of the former. Post hoc propter hoc? Isn't it possible (and perhaps more likely) that both obesity and this "perception" are the effects of some third factor? Depression? Cultural factors? Stupidity? There is no mention in the article of any attempt to control the study against such possibilities.

Hoosier Fan's picture
Submitted by Hoosier Fan on Sat, 05/30/2009 - 4:05pm.

I really wonder who thinks up some of these studies - and who pays for them.

This study reminds me of an old Johnny Carson monolog about a study linking high salt consumption with shorter life spans. The testing method? Johnny said the scientists placed a 16 pound salt lick on top of a lab rat, came back later to find the rat dead, and therefore concluded that a large quantity of salt is dangerous to your health.
