A Fayetteville woman was arrested Friday after she struck two vehicles and subsequently fled from police officers after 1 p.m., police said.

Selena Christina Fleming, 20, of Lakepoint Lane, was apprehended by three sheriff’s detectives while she was talking on a cellphone and standing waist-deep in a lake near Ga. Highway 92 and Jimmie Mayfield Boulevard, police said. Initial reports that she was swimming in the lake were incorrect, police said.

Fleming’s vehicle hit two vehicles at the intersection of Glynn Street and Bradley Drive, police said. She continued south on Bradley Drive to Dennis Drive where she ran off the road into a ditch and took off on foot, police said. No one in the two struck vehicles was injured, police said.

After Fleming entered a wooded area off Hwy. 92 and Jimmie Mayfield Boulevard in south Fayetteville, police officers set up a perimeter and the sheriff’s helicopter Hawk 1 searched for her from the air. The sheriff’s K-9 tracking team was called in to help with the search, and Fleming may have entered the lake in an attempt to throw off the dog’s scent.

Fleming is charged with reckless driving, hit and run, interference with a police officer, driving with a suspended license, failure to maintain lane and improper use of a center lane, police said.

The dumbing down of America. I wonder how much jail time she's looking at?

Is this what we have come to? I wouldn't blame the officer if he said "oops she slipped and her head was under water". Darn it couldn't have happened to a nicer person. Stories like this keep me cynical.
