Hit and run suspect can't out-swim copsFri, 05/22/2009 - 3:00pm

A woman tried to swim away from police early this afternoon as they tried to arrest her for a hit and run case in Fayetteville. But three sheriff's detectives ultimately jumped into the lake to place the woman under arrest even as she continued to try and evade them in the water, officials said. The woman ditched her car and ran into a wooded area off Jimmie Mayfield Boulevard and Ga. Highway 92 after a Fayetteville officer tried to stop her early this afternoon, said Maj. Bryan Woodie of the Fayette County Sheriff's Office. Fayetteville police set up a perimeter to hem the suspect in as sheriff's helicopter Hawk 1 helped try to locate the suspect. Then a K-9 tracking team came in to help with the search. The suspect was later spotted trying to swim away from officers in a lake located in the wooded area, Woodie said. As detectives Bryan Lee, Brent Rowan and Anthony Rhodes entered the lake, the suspect tried to swim away from them also, he added. But the trio managed to bring the suspect from the lake, put on the handcuffs and send her on the way to the Fayette County Jail, Woodie said. login to post comments |
