F’ville OKs sidewalks

A pedestrian-friendly look is in the offing along Stonewall Boulevard. The Fayetteville City Council at the May 7 meeting approved a federally-funded sidewalk project in the city’s historic district and adopted the well head protection ordinance for city drinking water supplies.

Council members approved the cemetery transportation enhancement sidewalk project that will install brick pavers on both sides of Stonewall Avenue in front of the cemetery, from Tiger Trail to Ga. Highway 85. The project will include the brick pavers, benches and pedestrian lighting. The project will essentially mirror the work completed last year on Lanier Avenue.

The federally-funded project that includes a 20 percent local match is estimated at $350,000 with $33,490 of that amount to cover part of the cost. The cemetery trust fund currently has more than $40,000 available for the project.

Council approval allows project design work to begin. Construction could begin in approximately one year.

The council also approved the well head protection ordinance, creating a new district called a wellhead protection zone that identifies and describes potential pollution sources in the area surrounding city drinking water wells, the Manassas and Veal wells, in the vicinity of Gingercake Creek.

Initiated as a recommendation by Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD), the well head protection program was established to provide technical assistance and develop protection plans for ground water users in the state. The plan developed for the city will be adopted as an attachment to the ordinance. EPD bears responsibility for enforcement issues.

City Director of Water Rick Eastin in an earlier report said the potential pollution sources in the area of the wells include sewage pump and treatment stations, the old solid waste landfill and current waste transfer station, sewer lines, above ground and underground storage tanks, utility poles and electrical transformers.

The ordinance would establish that waste treatment facilities be operated in accordance with permit regulations, comply with all applicable standards and develop and adopt a contingency plan to deal with emergencies.

I have an amazing collection of cell phone snapshots of Riverdale jaywalkers up and down old 85. Amuses me to no end.

Where you gonna cross the road? Wherever you happen to be. I suspect it's more based on where they're going rather than where they are -- namely, the McDonalds or gas station mini-mart on the other side.

Women with strollers in the median swale of a four lane state route pushing a baby stroller and talking on a phone, patiently waiting to cross. Brothers with amazingly ill-fitting shorts/pants/clown outfit choosing to walk in-between stopped cars at a red light instead of walking another two feet to the crosswalk. On and on. Reminds me of what VS Naipaul wrote in A Bend in the River.

I'm at the Riverdale Post Office today buying 700 freaking two cent stamps. I'm standing in this long line when this Riverdale Resident asks me how much the two cent stamps cost. With a dazzled look on my face I politely replied...."Two Cents". Then she goes to the clerk and asks her the same question. The clerk says "two cents". Me thinks she was your friend Comrade.
