Fayette’s third graders made big gains on the 2009 Third Grade Writing Assessment, according to results just released by the Georgia Department of Education.

Compared to last year, scores in the “does not meet” category dropped from three to eight percent with passing scores in the “meets” and “exceeds” category increasing five to nine percent collectively.

Fayette continues to outpace both the state and neighboring school systems in its region, which include Butts, Fayette, Henry, Lamar, Newton, Pike, Spalding and Upson counties, by having nine to 10 percent fewer students “not meeting” standards and anywhere from 10 to 14 percent more students posting passing scores.

The Georgia Third Grade Writing Assessment covers four types of writing: narrative, informational, persuasive and response to literature. Third grade teachers assess the writing analytically in four domains: ideas, organization, style and conventions. Teachers collect writing samples by providing many opportunities for students to produce the various types of writing throughout the year.

Wow, good to hear - I know personally I was shocked at the garbage my daughter, third grade, brought home as "writing". Needless to say all of her scores were "does not meet". You see I have found the "no child left behind" really needs a new title. If you are self-taught, then sure, you won't be left behind, but if you require any type of instruction, forget it. You are out of luck. I see the huge differences with my daughter than when my sons were in elementary. Schools are pushing things so quickly down these kids throats, if you get it great! Otherwise, too bad, we must move on. I had been saying since the first of the year "she has a problem" the response was "no, she's fine, she'll be fine". Well first the writing scores and then CRCT. Our education system is not what the papers and BOE make it out to be. It is wonderful for some, those intellectually gifted, but like I said, Heaven forbid you require instruction. Can't wait until next year with the larger class sizes.
