Praise god. He is home at last. Now we can truly move on in changing this unjust nation.

simply put,he chose political self-preservation over his responsibility to his constituents and his country. In his mind, doing the right thing is doing whatever it takes to get re-elected. He is not to be trusted.

Veterans like Arlen are used to empty compliments from folks who want to feel patriotic. I'm sure he is used to these same patriots giving veterans the Max Cleland, John Murtha treatment. Heck, they even attacked John McCain when he dared run against GW Bush in 2000.

So, I'm sure he could give a crap what a bunch of "patriots" who have basically turned on their veterans in favor of politics before have to say about him now. That would include you, at home ab flexer; Jokerman; and your buddy curmudgen too. Politics is a tuff game. Arlen wants to be on the winning team; not the whining team.

Jokerman, we will gladly take Olympia Snow and any other legislator who is uncomfortable with their country being called communist, Marxist, and Socialist. You have an airtight strategy, Joker: Hemorrhage members and win big in 2010. You must be a Palin. Can't argue with your logic though.

Was Specter sent to Washington to represent the citizens of Pennsylvania or just the Republican citizens of Pennsylvania?

Submitted by AtHomeGym on Thu, 04/30/2009 - 7:51am.

Of course he theoretically represents all PA Citizens but he was elected to office by voters who were primarily social and fiscal conservatives. He has bsically abandoned them. But I suspect that Pat Toomey will win the next PA Senate battle anyway.

Ah, "theoretical representation"...I think I understand where you are coming from now....sorta like saying Rep. Lynn Westmoreland theoretically represents me... Eye-wink

Like you, I am avidly looking forward to seeing Pat Toomey go mano-a-mano against Specter in Pennsylvania in 2010. I'd caution you against wagering either of your retirement checks on Toomey, though...you'll recall the last time there was a statewide race between an unrepentant social conservative and a fiscal moderate (Santorum vs. Casey in 2006) the social conservative Santorum got creamed by almost a 3-2 margin!

I predict a bumper crop of sour grapes from the rapidly disintegrating Republican party.

Arlen Specter has always been an enigma to me: if you look at his votes regarding abortion, he's all over the map: pro-choice, no-choice, confirm some conservitard Supreme Court justices, badmouth others.

He is probably the last of a dying breed: the moderate Republican. Like most Americans, he's become appalled at how much the fringe ultraright have hijacked the Republican party on social issues. He represents a state with a large Democratic population and is heavily Catholic to boot, so there is an argument that he does represent his moderately conservative state fairly well.

I think the fact that the National Review detests Arlen Specter is reason enough for me to support him. The social Neanderthals on the right have been wanting to replace him for years...and now they get their chance.

Once the Minnesota Supreme Court does its job and seats Al Franken as Minnesota's junior U.S. Senator, the Democrats will have their bulletproof 60 vote supermajority. This is a huge positive for America, and further hastens the demise of the rapidly shrinking Republican party.

The only drawback to today's announcement is the fact that it elevates the slimiest man in the world, Senator Joe Lieberman, to a deal-making, deal-breaking kingmaker.

Overall, it's a good day for America! Laughing out loud

Submitted by jokerman on Wed, 04/29/2009 - 2:14am.

My opinion is that Arlen saw the handwriting on the wall. A March poll showed that he couldn't compete with his likely Republican competition in the 2010 primary. So he did the pragmatic thing and jumped. Jumpin' Arlen Specter. This kind of creature is exactly what the Republicans didn't need. So goodbye Arlen, we hardly knew ya. And take Olympia Snow with you. Arlen will do exactly what is good for Arlen. So he's yours for keeps. Let me know how that works out for you. One thing you need to remember is that not too long ago, people were wringing their hands wondering if the Democrats were finished too. It's cyclical. I will guarantee you that you will be very unhappy after the 2010 elections.

Robert W. Morgan's picture

Specter good riddance indeed, but I think it is just the beginning. The 2 from Maine are almost certain to defect and others who find more Democrats in their district thanks to the millions of new voter registrations that occurred last time just so they could vote for Obama. Those that vote again will naturally vote blindly for the Democrat - and the handouts.

If you really want to get depressed, read James Carville's new book which predicts 40 more years of Democrat rule. It is not wild-eyed liberalism, it is simply a study of shifting demographics, the most telling of which is the decline in the percentage of mature white male voters between 1980 and 2010. I forget the exact percentages but they went from a clear majority of the voting population to a distant 3rd place.

than you know.. Behind the push for National Health Care and Illegal Alien Amnesty push it is all about the votes.. The more Americans become enslaved with entitlements and the more Illegals are giving amnesty and then the right to vote.. this secures the future of the Democrat party..
The wild eyed College crowd.. that wouldn't know a political issue if it walked up slapped them out of their Birkenstocks, could not care less.. They just voted for a novelity not an issue. These guys will keep the Dems in action for awhile.. This Country is fundamentally changing and will be going through many spasms to come.. Will we come out a better Country or will we emerge a less safe.. less free.. poorer Country.. Time will tell.. I for one fear for the Constitution.. I must disagree with your assessment on Senator Lieberman. His stance on Israel is as it should be ----faithful. And, when no other Democrat on planet could even be found, he strode to the well of the Senate and rebuked President Clinton, as he should have. And he maintained the respect of others. Even after the Democrats in Connecticut denied him the nomination to the US Senate, the voters did not-- they elected him as an independent. Yes, Joe was an annoying whiner during the Florida voting debacle but all in all he is a decent public official.

Let me test you in an unfair manner Sniffles--- how do you rank Lieberman as against our own shining Rep. Westmoreland.

sniffles5's picture
Submitted by sniffles5 on Tue, 04/28/2009 - 3:50pm.

Oooh no contest...Lieberman wins in a rout.

Westmoreland has earned his reputation as a buffoonish back-bencher of little consequence. Having said that, he has been a very reliable conservative vote, and represents his conservative constituents to the best of his ability.

Lieberman, sadly, enjoys national prominence. His loyalties to Israel far outstrip his loyalties to America. He lusts after power for power's sake. This will be his last term in the Senate, thankfully.

Senator Specter’s deception as a Republican was neither his first nor his most notable. He has been grandiose, self-serving and not the least committed to cognizant principle, in my opinion. It is remarkable, though, that any politician could enter the halls of Congress, much less avoid unbearable ostracism, after he concoted the theory of a single bullet in the assassination of President Kennedy. Even the Report of the Select Committee on Assassinations of the U.S. House of Representatives in 1979 concluded, in part, that “Scientific acoustical evidence establishes a high probability that two gunmen fired at President John F. Kennedy.” Other conclusions in the Warren Commission Report embarrass Specter greatly. I truly wonder, and I will let Sniffles comment---- does the Democratic party really want him? Maybe for the vote but certainly not for the intellectual honesty.

"...does the Democratic party really want him? Maybe for the vote but certainly not for the intellectual honesty."

How exactly was Obama gonna destroy the middle class? I can't seem to recall a campaign promise to do that.

ionizd's picture
Submitted by ionizd on Wed, 04/29/2009 - 12:13pm.

He will do so by cutting taxes on the lower 50% of income wage earners and overspending. When the lower income brackets are no longer contributing in any appreciable manner to the total revenues collected by the government, naturally that burden shifts to the upper tax brackets. Those upper tax brackets are the driving force of our economy, so when they must pay more to the government, they have less to invest, buy goods and services, etc...
It's really a shame that Democrats misrepresent the truth about taxation. Their insistence on destroying capitalism in this country will cause so much heartache. What will happen is no less than tragic. Our high income wage earners will spend and invest less, so the job market won't grow. This means that the unemployment rate will either level of at some dismal European-esque number, probably double digits, which will remove even more of the tax burden from the lower income levels and shift more of the tax burden to the upper 50%, thus perpetuating the downward spiral.
Meanwhile, our government officials are spending at an unprecedented rate. At some point, the argument will be made that since the deficits are so high, taxes will need to be raised on everyone except for the "unfortunates" that the elected officials will carry the banner for. They, of course will represent a high enough percentage of the population to ensure the election of liberal politicians who will continue to raise taxes, re-distribute wealth and grow the federal government.
Make no mistake, this has been going on for quite awhile now, and Obama simply represents an escalation in the war against the U.S. and our beloved Constitution and Bill Of Rights. The biggest advantage they have over us--"they" meaning the collectivists-- is that they recruit their foot soldiers from our youth to use against us, and the recruiters themselves are trusted educators and politicians, traitors to their own people who have lived among us all their lives.
They are winning, and it certainly doesn't help our cause that so-called conservatives often are christian theocrats who are more interested in governing what happens in someone else's bedroom than fighting for the private citizen's rights against confiscatory levels of taxation and outright confiscation of people's property through abuses of the Imminent Domain and Asset Forfeiture laws. Not only that, but the so-called conservatives don't seem motivated to stop government waste and obscene spending by members of congress who have forgotten that they work for the people and not vice-versa.
Oh yes, Obama will destroy the middle class! I would hasten to add that it will just be collateral damage in this case... The target is the liberty and wealth of the United States, and they will stop at nothing to either possess it or destroy it.
I actually think we've gone past the point of no return. The only questions that I really have at this point are these:
1) When will the elected officials drop the pretense that this is still a country governed by the Constitution, the Bill Of Rights and by an equal application of law?
2) Will the citizens of this country go quietly into that dark night? Most have shown in the past that they will do so readily. How much more insult will they bear before taking a stand?
Laugh, fellow common people. Call me a conspiracy theorist, or worse. Label me an extremist. It doesn't matter. Learn your history and know the truth. The elected officials that you have cast your lot with are not your friends. They do not care about you, save for the number of your votes that will keep them in power, at least long enough for them to be able to do so without your exalted blessing.
I now return you to your regularly scheduled petty disagreements.
