PTC denies big sign requestFri, 04/24/2009 - 3:38pm

A sign variance requested by Global Aviation and World Airways was denied last week by the Peachtree City Council. Not only that, but one of the company’s two wall signs may ultimately have to be taken down, officials said. The companies, which occupy a prominent office space off north Peachtree Parkway near Ga. Highway 74, had sought approval for two new wall signs to replace the current ones. They also wanted one of the signs to be 56 square feet which nearly would have doubled what’s allowed under the city’s current sign ordinance, officials said. Global Aviation is the largest charter airline and largest provider of military transport in the United States. A representative said the request for the one larger sign was to make sure both signs were of the same scale, so the World Airways sign wouldn’t be more noticeable than the Global Aviation sign. “You could make World Airways smaller,” said Mayor Harold Logsdon. Councilman Steve Boone said that Delta Community Credit Union had to drastically shrink its signs to meet city code despite the length of its name and the rather large size of the building. City Planner David Rast noted that the two signs currently on the building were approved by the city in error by the sign administrator at that time. The request to replace both signs, with one being over the city’s size limitations, are both in violation of the city’s current sign ordinance, Rast said. “In other words we are being asked to double violate our sign ordinance, which we have never done,” said Councilman Don Haddix. The vote to deny the variance request was unanimous. Because the company’s initial sign permit for two signs was approved due to a city error, the city can require the company to take one of them down, according to City Attorney Ted Meeker. login to post comments |
