Secession fever

William Murchison's picture

Sneer, sneer, boo, hiss — and oh, boy! Did the “progressives” ever pour it on my governor, Rick Perry of Texas, for his playful reference at a Tea Party event to “secession” as an option possibly forming in the minds of sensible Texans.

Why would we be thinking about such? Because of “progressive” depredations in Washington, D.C., the governor said, if not in so many words.

The establishment harrumphed and gagged and generally went red. Gail Collins of the New York Times: “[H]ave you noticed how places that pride themselves on being superpatriotic seem to have the most people who want to abandon the country entirely and set up shop on their own?” Etc. Ad infinitum.

Come on, lady, back off a little. No one’s going anywhere — as well you certainly know. Nobody’s called for a secession convention.

I looked up and down the street this morning; not a single effigy of Nancy Pelosi dangled from the live oaks. Driving to the office, I heard no suggestion that we hang Harry Reid, Chris Dodd, or, preferably, both, to a sour apple tree.

No matter. Sigh. The progressives have the bit between their teeth and seem bent on the usual pretense that these Texans are a bunch of ingrates whom we shouldn’t trust as far as we can throw a grand piano.

Well, you know what? It’s too much trouble seceding, even if we could. And, pace the governor, we can’t.

Rather than the secessionary right he alleged we brought with us into the Union, we brought the right — undoubted, but similarly impractical — to divide into five states.

We’ll have to stick around a bit longer. That shouldn’t deprive us of the right to remind fellow Americans of some practices and virtues our land could do well to renew.

A key one is regard for the inherent right of local people, even under a federal union, to defend and oversee their own modes of life. In other words — golly gee! — Texans might not want exactly the same things Californians want.

They might wish lower taxes and less regulation by government. Their approaches to education and health care and energy might differ as well. So also the ways they deal with simple matters like eating: more sirloins in Texas, more tofu on the Left Coast.

Alas, the Obama regime, as we may decide to start calling it one of these days, has other notions. It appears to cherish uniformity, the close alignment of ideals and methods: everybody doing the same thing the same way for the same reasons.

The Obamanistas may want uniform rules regarding the cars and trucks we drive and the energy those vehicles consume. They want, it seems, national education standards — a goal furthered, as one hates to acknowledge, by a former Texas governor, George W. Bush via the No Child Left Behind Act.

We may even wind up with national standards for humor. A joke, son, ain’t a joke no more, and that’s the truth.

The governor of Texas no more demanded secession from the Union than he called for a Lone Star Beer to be brought him. He raised an eyebrow; he winked. Never mind. A stalwart “progressive” trying to show up conservatives is ever alert to serendipitous events and occasions.

So maybe he shouldn’t have said it. That’s from one perspective. Here’s another:

A Union of the sort our wise and virtuous founders thought they were creating is as loose and flexible as a Union can realistically be made; accommodative of divergent viewpoints, and all the stronger for it, all the more united, too.

The Union we seem to see dead ahead through the windshield, with the people of 50 different states all cuffed together in mutual subservience, isn’t what the founders had in mind.

Good for Rick Perry on that score: He raised a useful subject, even if to his own detriment. Let’s enjoy. Such a moment may not come again for a long, long time.

I'm pretty liberal and I believe that secession is not at all crazy, and states have every right to secede. People are too quick to associate secession with extremism because of the civil war. It's sad that its treasonous to suggest the United States would be better off split up, but I think if the south had been allowed to secede we'd be better off today, regardless of the moral dilemma of slavery. I think patriotism is a waste of time and I don't care about the pride of living in a country that goes from sea to shining sea. A smaller government would simply be more effective, and there would be so much easier to get things done.

Thank God for the Military which you seem to scorn and the Country that you obviously don't care much for.. at least you get to say the things like that above.. and still not get placed in a gulag..
Thanks for reminding us what Liberals are afraid to admit openly...

Lindsey, this whole secession craziness is born from the minds of conservatives and reverberated around tea parties everywhere. This is the talk of a GOVERNOR of a US State. And it is crazy. Gov. Perry has reiterated the possibility of secession of Texas from the Union on at least four occasions. Don't you remember this Letter to the Editor, Lindsey?
Read through it. Pay particular attention to crazy ole PTC Avenger. These are your fellow conservatives, and for some reason they have not factored in to this equation that military professionals who have sworn their allegiance to this Union and its flag; all 50 stars of it, would not hesitate for a millisecond to defend her against all enemies; foreign and domestic. They don't realize that we bear true faith and allegiance to her. Military families move around so much, they are Americans first; Texans, or Georgians, or North Carolinians, or Oklahomans SECOND. If you don't like this message my friend, you'll have to address the source.

Maybe you listen to Rush Limbaugh too much, but there are actually more than 2 monolithic political viewpoints. And if I believe in a state's right to secede that puts me at odds with most liberals. Most American liberals are patriotic, I don't speak for them.

you and Mainstream/Davids Mom.. should go to a convention together.. afterall it important to keep on message.. The RUSH bot thing is a bit old.. sort of smells like old cheese or a old cut the cheese may be more appropriate...
With a few exceptions here.. as a general rule most lefties disdain the Military.. and like you stated.."I think patriotism is a waste of time and I don't care about the pride of living in a country that goes from sea to shining sea" sort of proves my point.. Not saying all hard lefties are not for God and Country.. Just the most vocal ones.. and the ones you guys seem to send to Washington..

And I don't know the reason you said this:
"With a few exceptions here.. as a general rule most lefties disdain the Military.. "

Not true at all my friend. Many, many of the lefties around here do wear or have worn the uniform.

I know no disdain for the military worse than THESE RELIGIOUS RIGHT WING Westboro folks.

We have nothing like that in these parts. I don't think they would be safe here, and that's one thing I love about the South and Southerners. We don't tend to tolerate this type of cruel anti-military sentiment. I wish the ACLU had refused to get involved, but you know their love for the camera and attention :s .

I can't figure out this new Mike guy. He claims liberal views and talks a wee bit wacky right. How 'bout neither side adopt him. Let's just leave him in a basket on the steps of a fire house and let them figure out what to do with him Laughing out loud .

I'm actually from Peachtree City. And how does it make me crazy if I believe that in a free society, people can willingly split from that society. You could try to think outside all of the propaganda you've been hearing all your life about secession being treasonous, but I don't think you want to or are capable of doing that, I think you'd rather throw labels on me and accuse me of being a dirty anti military heathen. If patriotism involves the psychological need of keeping this country a UNITED states, when its really unnecessary, then I think its a waste of time. It has nothing to do with the people who have risked their lives fighting in the military. So the responses I'm getting prove my point exactly that anyone who suggests secession is okay is shouted down, when this country itself was born out of secession.

What Murchison does not understand is that for the most part Americans hate Texas. They used to not but they do now. Seriously, the vast majority (75%?) of the US has a real problem with Texas governors and Texas politicians in general. They have proven to be lying, greedy, phony, hypocritical people who put their own interests ahead of the country. Really, Murchison you need to know that. Most people I talk to HATE Texas and they have never been there. We are sick of the staggering amount of bullshit we have had to put up with coming out of Texas. And most of the problems that Murchison complains about seem to be caused or made much worse by the last Texan we all wish had never gotten the job!

I agree with the posts that just seven or so months ago, this kind of talk would have been met with a harsh, sharp response along the lines of, "There is a war going on! How can you talk like that? You are helping the enemy."

Texas sucks. Get the hell out of my country.

I was born in Texas, raised in the south, and came back here after I traveled the whole world and found more extreme and more widespread examples of bigotry and racism than I ever saw in the south. You think things are bad here? In some parts of the world, "Ethnic cleansings" take the lives of thousands of men, women and children every year--and often they are outwardly indistinguishable from those doing the "cleansing"
I usually don't get this bent out of shape, but these casual personal attacks and thoughtless aspersions on other people's homes, beliefs and heritage need to stop!
In other words, now you done pi$$ed me off, SON!

your comments prove that women aren't inherently less likely to make stupid, insensitive or bigoted statements.
Perhaps you are one of those girls who like to pick fights with men because you've never had your ass kicked by a less than gentlemanly fellow and it makes you feel powerful.
Or, maybe you just grew "Internet Balls", and you feel invincible because of the anonymity the message board provides.

FYI, in Main parlance, responding to her comments with better comebacks is called whining and crying. Her comebacks absolutely suck, so it is really no challenge. Since she knows her comebacks suck, she will then say your feelings were hurt or something weak like that.

Also, this isn't the first time she has called me a "manly man". It appears to be some sort of syndrome. Probably something like the new guy walking into prison and meeting his new love connection. You know, he is going to have to play that new little role for a while. That's her role on here. She's taken, for now.

It is nice to see people have similar reactions to other people's posts. Otherwise, there is a teeny tiny voice in the back of our melons going, "could I possibly be off base here?" Then, a blogging buddy comes through with a drop kick, and we go, "No. I still get it " Smiling If there was only one set of opinions to have, this blog would have died years ago.
