By: John Munford

Interested parents are invited to attend a seminar on Internet safety for children at the Starr’s Mill High School auditorium Monday, March 6 from 7-9 p.m.

The event, offered by the Rising Starr Parent Teacher Organization, will focus on risks of Internet use and resources available to protect children.

A psychologist specializing in adolescents and addictive behavior will specifically address the impact of compulsive Internet use.
For more information, contact PTO board member Kim Smith at kkrrsmith@comcast.net.

I hope that speakers for the meeting are people involved in the daily fight against predators (i.e. PTC police chief or even the undercover person if there's a way they would not blow their cover). Teenagers often times get the message better if they know it's someone who has seen the issue firsthand. If the message comes from parents at this meeting, the result (from the teenagers' perspective) will be the usual "parents are stupid" and "not in touch with the times".

Parents! Want to see something terrifying? Go to Google News and type in myspace. If those stories don't curl your hair, I don't know what will. Get in your childrens rooms and look over their shoulders if need be!

check for my blog entry - I went to Google News and just came up with a list of other news sites and so forth - I know I'm doing something wrong but really really want to see this - I know my kids use it and when I cut them off they had a fit and said it's how they talk to their friends without tying up the phone. I don't like it and would like to see what you're talking about.

It's myspace.com

And for every "terrible" story prompting the general public and out-of-touch parents' kneejerk reaction, there are thousands of non-stories. Myspace is just like anything else, from a gun to a car to a pencil: it can be used and misused.

Being shocked at what's on Myspace or what your kids are doing isn't the problem: it's a symptom. Know what's going on with your kids.

And you are right about this one two, Squirrel. Misuse, abuse, and overuse can be a problem with anything. Myspace is not unique.
