Starr's Mill basketball celebrates
The Fayette County High School varsity basketball team had a 23-1 record heading into tonight's match against Starr's Mill. Tonight, they added one more loss to that record and now know that they will open the AAAAA state tournament on the road next week.

Starr's Mill defated Fayette County 63-54 on Wednesday, thanks in part to a stellar performance from Justin Reed and his 22 points.

Fayette County led for most of the first half but with just over two minutes remaining in the second quarter Starr's Mill took a lead they would not relinquish. A fast paced first half gave way to a sluggish second half as the Panthers maintained their composure and momentum. Starr's Mill made the free throws down the stretch when they had to and sealed the win.

"Nobody has given us a chance all year," said Coach Brandon Hutchins. "But all season long I just kept preaching, 'believe, believe, believe."

The Panthers believed in themselves on Wednesday and now will take on Newnan in the region championship on Friday night. In addition to Reed, the Panthers got double digit scoring performances from Mark Harris with 14 and Spencer Shelton with 10. Fayette County was led by 15 points from both Chris Pettaway and Jeremiah Enloe.

Good Luck Starrs Mill on you game tomorrow. You should be proud you made it this far. But along with others we all know that the real championship will be played at 6:30. When Fayette County plays Mundys Mill. I am proud of our boys and our Coach. I always will be.
I don't understand the wording though of the artical. After looking through all the articles we have collected this year I did not recall seeing any wording as "slay" when we beat any team time this year. Maybe the paper should of came to a few more games this year and seen what our kids where capiable of.
Can't wait to get to Savannah. Who would not drather be at the beach anyway? Road Trip.....lets go Flynn fanatics!!!!!!!!!!!

If the Panthers had lost the game would you have still written a story about the Tigers winning it? I know why the defeat of the BEST team in their region is so news worthy, but the use of the word SLAY is a bit harsh. I found this definition in the dictionary for the word SLAY:

One entry found for slay.
Main Entry: slay
Pronunciation: 'slA
Function: verb
transitive senses
1 : to kill violently, wantonly, or in great numbers; broadly : to strike down : KILL
intransitive senses : KILL, MURDER
synonym see KILL

WAS THAT APPROPRIATE WORD USAGE? THE SCORE DID NOT VALIDATE THIS. THE TIGERS WILL FIND MORE VICTIORIES TO ADD TO THEIR RECORD IN STATE PLAY NEXT WEEK!!! THEY ARE A TEAM WITH HEART!

Even if Fayette won there would have been a front page picture because that's what you have gotten all season. Our guys worked for it and believed. Yours didn't have the heart and lost.

Sorry you lost in the only sport you have to be proud of. Our school has been earning championships all year long (and we aren't stopping now). So far EVERY Starr's Mill sport has won the region championship (or county for swimming). Yes, the Boys swimming and Cross Country teams got second, but our school won the title overall. Where were you? I only remember you being "slayed" in the volleyball championship match. (In that case you were "slayed." Look up the scores they reflect it!)

Congratulations on the best record in the region. Records don't win games. Heart does, and last night Starr's Mill earned it.

Enjoy your time in Savannah (while we are hosting the game at HOME next week). I hear the weather's nice.

Thank you so much SM03 you did a great job on word usage of SLAY. Better then the writer of the article did. Can you be any more derogatory, insentitive, mean or cruel in what you just posted about Fayette County High School? I did NOT say one cruel thing about Starr's Mill. I posted a comment to the writer of the article sweetie, AND unlike you I didn't trash talk another team!! You don't know our guys, therefor cannot judge where their heart was last night. THEY HAVE THE HEART AND NO ONE REMEMBERS "WHO WON REGION" AFTER A YEAR OR TWO GOES BY....HOWEVER THEY DO REMEMBER THE TEAM THAT HAD THE HEART AND THE BEST SEASON! tiger guys and girls....you have made this the SEASON a joyous one! Win or lose...I know where your HEART is!!!

People, if you want to brag about your schools and bash rivals, that's what a sports vent is for, not the Citizen.

Please, can't we all just get along.

I have no favorites in the county sports scene. I cover 10 schools in Fayette, Coweta and S. Fulton County and each season that translates to between 40-60 teams. So when you just see scores and leading scorers in an article, that's why.

Fayette County made the front of recent papers as their winning streak grew larger and larger. Our publisher wanted to be sure that we recognized their success and hyped up the upcoming tournaments.

I used the world slay to convey a meaning like - David slaying Goliath. Perhaps I should have used the word topple, but I didn't, my bad. In hindsight, topple would have been better for alliteration.

I wish everybody the best of luck in their tournament games and I honestly try to give everybody the best coverage that I can in the space that I am afforded.

Soon, we hope to have a sports vent type thing on this site but I hope that the tone can be more civil than what I have witnessed in the comments recently. Sports are meant to be enjoyed by players and fans alike. When you get all worked up and offended, the fun is gone. This season will be over before you know it, so enjoy it while it lasts. Be proud of your teams and their efforts. Everyone this season, from teams that didn't win a game in their region, to teams that went on 16 game winning streaks, has given their all this season and I have tried my best to report the scores and keep my finger on the pulse of the local sports scene.

I always accept tips, scores, news and photos from parents and fans, as I am a one man sports department. So, if you feel there hasn't been enough on your team, e-mail me what you've got.

Just please be polite. As the old saying goes, you catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar.

The Citizen sports reporter Michael Boylan had an unblemished record heading into Wednesday’s coverage of the Fayette High/Starrs Mill basketball game. But the streak ended abruptly when fcbFAN1 issued a controversial “Disproportionate use of Metaphor” penalty. While a shouting match ensued on the sidelines over interpretation of Webster’s official rules, Boylan changed his gameplan from metaphor to cliché. “Please, can’t we all just get along” he countered, regaining his lost momentum. But a “Double Drivel” penalty issued late in the game for a Flies/Honey/Vinegar air ball clinched the match for the opposing team.

I've been reading your stuff for a long time, there's no need to address blog hacks who criticize your writing...

But he did! He felt the need to reply and FC fans appreciate that. That is what makes a GOOD writer!
