Beware of airsoft guns

My 10 year old son was accidentally shot in the eye with an airsoft rifle (shoots 350 fps). He now has 2 permanent tears in his iris, cataract, glaucoma and an epiretinal membrane. He is at high risk for a retinal detachment and will eventually need eye surgery. I'm regretful for ever giving in and buying him an airsoft gun. He is lucky to still have his eye sight. He takes eye drops for his glaucoma every night and for the rest of his life. He now fears all types of guns and will not attend his friends' paintball b'day parties.

First off how did your son obtain this weapon/toy????? Gee I wonder... Anyhow until the parents grow up im sure we will continue to hear more of these sad stories about gee looked what happened... What part of air-soft-gun did you fail to understand.. Let them be kids for a while, before they have to become combatants out in the street...Good luck with you child.....PEACE

I'm beginning to think it's not an act.

At least once a day we encounter a child in the E.R injured by a myriad of so-called toy products, theres nothing like having to reinsert an eyeball, knocked out of socket or worse as in this case by this type of product.. Any type of toy the fires any kind of projectile, in my view should be banned.. But it goes much farther than that, as to my point... This morning, an 8Yr boy was brought in bleeding profusely from the temple of his forehead.. The triage nurse reported that he and his brother had been jumping on the trampoline with several friends. Apparently his father had been splitting firewood earlier in the day and had failed to secure an axe left laying near by, well the kids had been playing with the axe and it ended up laying in the grass adjacent to the trampoline, when this unfortunate child jumped off the trampoline, well you figure it out.. Anyhow whos to blame???? You figure it out... When you do you let me know. So if i am to be a jerk to get my point across,, so be it, it just might get some to wondering where their kids are and what are they doing. If it only saves one then it was worth it....PEACE...

Kudos to you if you work in an ER. But I would submit that your responsibility doesn't extend to fixing fault or blame or publicly indicting parents or others . Surely you are entitled to your personal opinions about incidents you are involved with but perhaps those may best be privately contained.

Not by any means... The burden of guilt these parents feel is apparent in their eyes as we sew their children back together, for this is a burden they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. Our job is to save them we do not have time for the where and why. Just do something about it... Of course kids are going to be kids and get hurt playing thats all part of life. But lets not enable them to be injured further by obtaining these types of product....PEACE

during the heyday of Jarts- lawn darts. I bet those injuries were fun to treat. You have a bad timing thing. So a guy puts out a blog to tell people about the dangers of air soft guns. Certainly a point taken and a PSA. So what do you do, but pile on to the guy. I don't think that it was his kid's gun, but regardless. Do you think a MADD convention is the best place to harangue the mom's to look after their kids better? geez

I remember wanting Jarts when they first came out....then 60 Minutes did an expose featuring all these kids that had been maimed or killed by Jarts. I think they were outlawed soon after.

to learn that they were not officially banned in the US util 1988. And 1989 in Canada. I thought they were outlawed in the late middle 70's. wow

My mom and dad bought them when they first came out. My brother and I had all kinds of fun with them. And survived unscathed. Our experiences and philosphies undoubtedly differ, but I am chalking this experience up as a plus in my column compared to yours. Smiling

It might be a good idea to read/understand the original post before making yourself look like a dummy. Nothing in the post says her son possesses such a gun--just says he was a victim of an accident.

What bussiness does,,, or better yet for all those lames out there, how does any child come into the posession of said weapon/toy????? Whats that you say??? You guessed it, an adult is at the heart of the matter... But then again most of the parents out there today are nothing more than kids themselves, who never grew up.. As long as the kids go out and play, Moms and Dads could care less until something like this happens, while i feel sad for the child who has been maimed for life.... Until adults start acting accordingly and not providing their kids with these types of products... As well as holding other parents accountable for their kids actions and behavoirs... I am afraid the emergency ward will continue to be capacity filled with these types of injurys.....BLESS
