PTC reaps benefit of energy savingsFri, 03/27/2009 - 3:41pm

A program to retrofit city-owned buildings with energy-saving equipment has paid off for Peachtree City. The first year of the program netted a $100,000 savings for the city in one year’s time, Mayor Harold Logsdon said last week. “That was a good deal,” Logsdon said. The total savings of electricity was more than 1 million kilowatt hours, with half of that coming in the main City Hall building, officials said. The savings was such that the city was able to save an additional $7,600 by canceling an annual energy consumption audit offered by Trane, Inc., the company that installed the new fixtures. Renovations included installation of high efficiency lighting, water savings fixtures, including low-flow faucets and commodes, building automation systems including automatic light shut-offs, building envelope and insulation improvements, and a high efficiency heating and air conditioning system. The project guaranteed energy savings of 877,266 kilowatt hours per year, the equivalent of removing 114 cars from our roads every year or recycling 215 tons of waste. The first full year following renovations showed an energy savings of over 1,000,000 kilowatt hours, which is 10 percent above the predicted savings, Trane officials said. In addition to the savings in electricity, the project has saved 18,448 therms of natural gas and 1.2 million gallons of water. Another benefit of the project has been improved air conditioning and heating control at City Hall, officials said. Company officials presented the city with the “Trane Energy Efficiency Leader in Municipal Government Award” for its success in the program. login to post comments |
