A Fayette County jury heard an audio recording Tuesday of a Peachtree City man’s confession to shaking his 10-week-old son in August before calling 911 to summon help after noticing the child had trouble breathing.

In the recording, George Anthony Bowman Jr. tells police Det. Gary Meier that he shook his infant son after the child began squalling. Bowman said that seconds later he realized what he had done and put the child down in a swing, only to notice quickly that the baby had trouble breathing.

In his second interview since the incident, Meier asked Bowman what happened.

“I shook him,” Bowman replied. He later said the act was done out of frustration with a number of issues including the death of his father.

Bowman is on trial in Fayette County Superior Court for two counts of aggravated battery and one count of cruelty to children. Testimony in the case continued Tuesday afternoon.

The child was shaken with such force that his brain struck the front and back of the skull, Assistant District Attorney Warren Sellers said. That led to bleeding in the child’s brain and a three-week hospital stay, Sellers said. The baby now has developmental delays and is receiving several different types of therapy, he added.

During a mid-morning break, Bowman broke into tears and was consoled by a member of his defense team.

Bowman’s defense attorney, Kim Cornwell, told the jury in her opening remarks that Bowman didn’t intend to cause the injuries and thus should be found not guilty. She also said Bowman would testify in the case.

The incident occurred at the family’s home on Beaver Dam Road while Bowman was taking care of the baby by himself while his wife was at work.

He still was wreckless in his actions...I am sure many people at the time, didn't mean to do things, but he did.

Look at the damage the man has done to his child, father hell, no way he is a father to shake a defenseless child that way.

Jail time will cure you of that shaking problem buddy. Next time, pick on someone your own size..
