How to appeal your tax assessment

We have been paying ridiculous amounts of property taxes here in Fayette County on inflated assessments of our homes for years. Last year I averaged paying $140 a week just for the privilege of living in Peachtree City. It is payback time.

We all know that our property values have dropped in the last year, yet why is the county assessor not busy lowering our valuations with the same vigor that he/she used to raise them?

Because that would require a moral and ethical character that is not part of being a bureaucrat.

So you need to take the initiative. You go to suite 110 at the Fayette County complex (next door to the auto tag office). You ask for your “Taxpayer’s Return of Real Property,” fill it out (it just asks for a few things), and turn it in by April 1, 2009.

That will start the ball rolling. The assessor has to do extensive research to validate your current assessment, while you do a little minor research in your neighborhood to show the drop. You cannot afford to be ripped off again this year.

This to me is the biggest issue of all. I can't believe there's not more vocal outrage regarding our skyrocketing property taxes. Lower the age of school exemption to 62 now. Place a moratorium that banks don't have to pay taxes on empty foreclosed houses and the county civic leaders will wake up fast. I applied for a new assessment 5 weeks ago. No response yet.

Let me know when you see em.. How ever the code enforcement guy came by the other day and was caught measuring my fence line for what ever reason, been there 23 years, then the health dept came by while i was cutting my yard the other evening, and wanted to know about my septic tank..., Guess the county is going to condem my property instead of reassess it.. Oh and just a word to the wise Fayette County the next employee you send out, that is not a Sheriff with a warrant, and does not stop by the house to announce their presence, before entering the property, will be treated as a trespasser as the property is posted click click.....BLESS
