UPDATED Detectives seek information on suspect; party out of control after notice on MySpace, text messages

Sheriff’s detectives have identified a 19-year-old Riverdale teen as the person shot to death after an out-of-control party at a home in the Country Lakes subdivision late Saturday night.

Andrew Wells died on the scene when he and two others were shot after an argument broke out, deputies said. One of the other two victims was identified as Jaquavius Dillingham, 18, of Union City, who was taken to Atlanta Medical Center for treatment with a non-life threatening injury, officials said. A reported third victim has not yet been identified by deputies.

Detectives are continuing to work to identify the person who fired the brazen shots late Saturday night while deputies were already on the scene clearing "hundreds" of people from the party.

Sheriff’s detectives are working on the case around the clock and are seeking information from anyone at the party who may have either witnessed the shooting or knows who the shooter is, McCastle said.

“We know somebody saw who the shooter was,” McCastle said.

Anyone with information is asked to call deputies at 770-461-6353, McCastle said. Deputies were able to interview some party-goers at the scene, McCastle said.

The shooting occurred as deputies were in the process of breaking up a party in the Country Lakes subdivision off Ga. Highway 279 that had “hundreds of people,” McCastle said. Moss Creek Court had cars lined on both sides of the road, leaving no room for emergency vehicles to get through, McCastle said.

The shots rang out during a fight that broke out and pandemonium ensued as people attempted to run away in multiple directions, McCastle said.

Officials believe a number of people at the party were not invited but attended after finding it listed on the MySpace website. Word of the party also spread through text messages, she said.

The party was authorized by the parents at the home, who were present during the time of the event, McCastle said. The parents have cooperated with authorities, she added.

The party grew out of hand with a large number of people inside the home, in the yard, and spilling out into the cul-de-sac, McCastle said.

Although investigators are working to determine if the shooting was gang-related, there has not yet been any indication that is the case, McCastle said.

When the shots rang out, deputies were in the process of getting people into their cars so they could leave the area, McCastle said. One of the shooting victims was taken to a local hospital by ambulance; another left the scene in a private vehicle, McCastle said.

Deputies had been called to the scene on a disturbance about 10:41 p.m., McCastle said. The party took place at 265 Moss Creek Court, she confirmed.

McCastle said the sheriff’s office was thankful for support from the Fayetteville and Clayton County police departments and also the Clayton County Sheriff’s Department.

How's that working out for you? Considering how many black men have killed other black men over the last thirty years, one must wonder what ignorant bloodshed Gandhi saved us from.

The exclusionary ugliness of the 1950s had to end. But fifty years of broken homes, under-education, over-incarceration and unemployment are neither a fitting substitute nor a workable definition of peace, love or brotherhood.

Would you put down the broad brush? I couldn't care less how the ethnic complexion of Fayette county changes insofar as the quality of life doesn't decrease. Look at how Riverdale, Morrow and Forest Park changed. That change happened to happen when blacks moved there in large numbers. It really is a simple cause and effect relationship. Scores of other similar examples can be cited across the country.

How's about blacks becoming the majority in ONE city of even medium size and producing a neutral impact on crime and a positive impact on education. I think you'd be surprised how perceptions would change.

Or, continue to bang the same old board about firehoses, dogs and lunch counters while BET inculcates yet another generation into "thug life".

Take a look at the impact Asians have on suburban communities: SAT scores go up, home values increase, neutral impact on crime.

I know you are not saying that broken homes, under-education, over-incarceration and unemployment is the lifestyle of all black men. Obama is not the only 'black' man who has a strong family ethic. Not all 'white' men have a 'Clintonian' problem. Please don't get caught in the 'broad-brush’ trap and let those who have no contact with 'blacks' think that there are no other lifestyles among blacks than the 'thug' life. We know that all 'whites' are not Archie Bunkers, not all Asians are 'Bruce Lee' - but some folks in this discussion act as if all blacks are 'thugs'. I'm from California - and all Asians are not smart!! But that is the expectation that they have for themselves - and is the expectation of others. A few years ago - a black girl got a perfect score on the SAT. Very little publicity - because that is not the expectation of women or minorities (except Asians) There are some here (in this discussion) who seem to be on the right track; stay involved in community issues; make sure that development enhances property value, schools remain above average in achievement and graduation rate; neighborhoods are maintained; crime remains low. If an individual uses his talents to the best of his ability given opportunity - they can and will succeed in this country. Poor educational opportunities, screwed drug laws (crack/cocaine), unjust sentences, and a judicial system that still incarcerates more minorities unjustly than the white population - needs to be corrected for all Americans. I'm encouraged by what I've seen posted in the last few days. I hope the plea for Sheriff Hannah to work with the community will be heeded.

"Poor educational opportunities, screwed drug laws, unjust sentences, and a judicial system that still incarcerates more minorities unjustly than the white population"

HUH?? What the...?

Gee golley, shuckey darn those pesky laws against illegal drug use....unbelievable how this country holds back the young people....

STOP MAKING EXCUSES OR THIS PROBLEM WILL NOT CHANGE! This is why the young black men don't think they have to change their anti-social behavior. They have people like you whining and sniveling and making excuses for them.

First of all through the unjust affirmative action programs (that actively discriminate against white people) minorities have been given a free pass in the education system, even when they have lower test scores than their white peers.

Second of all if you check the FBI crime stats young black men commit more violent crime than whites. This has been watched for years and even Bill Cosby and Larry Elder comment on it regularly. When you commit the lions share of the crime you will be sent to jail more often.

Just a few months ago the AJC published a report from the GBI that said young black men in DeKalb County between the ages of 19 and 28yrs old had a 76% chance of dying before age 30. This was based on crime stats. Crimes that actually happened.

Locally, we have a white Delta pilot who has not been granted bond because he is a dangerous fruitcake. I dare say if he had been black he would already have been let go via the race card.

Sheriff Hannah has been working with the community via neighborhood watch programs and responding to trouble reports. That is why the deputies were already on the scene when this party took a turn for the worse. If they hadn't been there more people probably would have been killed.

Now we need you and the local naacp to send a message to young black men that nobody, no group of people will make excuses for their outrageous behavior. They have been given every opportunity imaginable in America and they appreciate NOTHING!

This is why the anit-social behavior never changes. Stop making excuses for them, because there is NO excuse that is acceptable. Do you see anyone making excuses for the psycho Delta pilot? Did you see anyone make excuses for the teen who killed his friend at a drug party in PTC 2yrs ago? NO you didn't!!. That is the difference between the races and their view of crime and criminal behavior.

There I go again - making Americans with less melanin feel like victims. Sorry. NO ONE works harder to improve the behavior of minority children than the people that I work with in many organizations that are local and national. . .and we work hand in hand with organizations that recognize that there is a systemic problem in the United States with ALL of our children. Poor parenting, sub-standard education, (Sky - Georgia is number 47 in academic achievement out of the 50 states!) Doesn’t that concern anyone here? I have always been a supporter of the law enforcement agencies in Fayette County. I respond to your one-sided interpretation of my posts to bring out the point that there are blacks in Fayette County who are just as concerned about the safety in this community as 'whites'. My repetitions of some of the unfair practices that still exist in our country are not excuses. These practices also affect ALL juveniles. The protestors of the Jena situation asked for equal justice in that situation. They did not ask for the perpetrators - black or white - to be excused.

That is the difference between the races and their view of crime and criminal behavior.

Thank you for your intelligent comment on the difference in the view of criminal behavior between an entire group of people who happen to be identified by race. I'm sure you've talked to all white people and all black people to support your findings that this difference that you note is accurate. Geez!!

Would this Jena situation be the one where the white kid was beaten unconscious by a group of 6 and yet Al Sharpton called it just a fight, and wanted then released? How many black kids were beaten unconscious there by a group of white kids?

According to DM, ALL white people do not ask for equal justice for violent criminals. That's what she meant when she states "That is the difference between the races and their view of crime and criminal behavior."

Surely she talked to all white people and all black people to support her comment that the difference that she noted is accurate. It would be hypocritical if she didn't.

The main point is nobody should try to justify a criminals behavior.

The only time I see the naacp start sniveling and protesting is when a black person is the criminal. I have not seen them protest when any other minority is convicted of a crime. Why??

Let's use our current situation as an example: We have a scumball psycho Delta pilot who tortured his wife for years. He happens to be white. Do you see any large group like the naacp trying to explain away his satanic crime?? Do you see anyone on this blog site defending that worthless piece of garbage? No you don't.

This is what your excuse for the young black men sounded like:--

"That poor little white Delta pilot, he has been troubled by the shift work and lack of sleep. He only makes 6 figures a year after taxes, so the economy is also very stressful for him. Not to mention the large number of people whose lives he is responsible for. With affirmative action firmly in place he had to have 5,000 more hours of flying time PIC (pilot in command) in order to compete with minorities for the same job. This has taken a great toll on his ability to handle stress. I just hope that the officials at Delta and the FAA, can all come together and have a group hug with the white pilots so that we can all heal from this situation."

What if I or any one else had actually offered up an excuse like that just becuase he is white? Just because he is white we should all be more understanding? That would have been and is pure BUNK!!

The difference is nobody has offered up an excuse like this for that satanic beast. It would be wrong if we had. The difference is I won't defend him just because he is white. He is a satanic monster who needs to be punished.

Now why do you continue to offer up excuses for young black men and the crime they willing inflict on innocent people? Why?? How can you not see that you enable these beasts everytime you make an excuse for them.

PS: Yes it is terrible that GA is 47 in education. It still is not an excuse to commit crime.

Coming from a Police/Swat Tac Officer I have been there and done that and got the Bullet/Stab scars to prove it.. Everytime a "Minority" was arrested for Drugs or Burglary I had the ACLU (they were based in the City I worked)in my face.. The NAACP was in front of the TV or news reporters claiming Brutality or False Arrest.. then by the time the trial was on.. We had been so smeared by the race baiters it was an up hill battle to get a conviction.. Most Police just turned it off and walked away tired from being the bad guy all the time..
DM is like a lot of the ACLU "Lawyers" I met.. they are more concerned with the Criminal then what they did to the Victim.. because surely if the Victim didn't have so much stuff and wasn't so damn greedy then that poor under privileged youth wouldn't have wanted their stuff in the first place... And shame on them for resisting then they would not have had to be pistol whipped or shot while the Criminal was liberating some of the stuff...
You do not make excuses for their criminal behavior.. it only encourages them to do it again..

I will not lower my standards.. So UP YOURS.. Evil

And shame on them for resisting then they would not have had to be pistol whipped or shot

My son was a SWAT officer in a large urban city - and pistol whipping is not part of the training. I was a member of the Citizens Committee of two large Police Departments - and not only did ACLU question the use of 'pistol whipping' but also the internal affairs division of the two departments question this type of behavior. The majority of law enforcement officers are supported in many communities because of their superior training and ability to come home every night to their families, and without having deprived another family of their loved one. I shudder to think of an officer who 'brags' about a pistol whipping or a shooting. My father joined LAPD in 1937 - and retired proud to state that he never had to draw his gun. Those were the days when officers knew the community - and were respected for the service and safety that they provided. My son will have over 20 years when he retires - and he will not be able to make the statement that my father proudly made. Different times, different communities. In most departments, when there is a shooting or a suspicion of unnecessary roughness - the department itself investigates as well as citizen groups and the ACLU. Unfortunately, it's the questionable arrests that make the news. Jails are full of criminals who were taken off the streets by officers who followed procedure, kept themselves and their partners safe, and protected the community that they served. A pistol whipping administered by a police officer is not justice - it is police brutality.

I'm not saying that all black men are thugs any more than you're saying all little black girls get perfect scores on the SAT.

The broad brush is yours and yours alone, and you seem to wield it with little control. Reading your posts reminds one of a small child holding a firehose on full blast.

Perhaps you will move beyond the "you too" fallacy that you push in such a half-hearted way. Have you ever re-read your posts and noticed how despite your protestations that things shouldn't be about race, you have a never-ending supply of old race-based boards to bang?

I really don't know what "unjust sentences" has to do with the rise of black crime in Fayette county. You seem quite confused.

Submitted by Davids mom on Tue, 03/10/2009 - 11:07pm.

Let's agree to disagree. 'Race' is the reason I started posting on this site. We are Americans - and we have been dealing with the 'race' question since Africans were brought to our shores. I don't push a 'you too' fallacy - because the reality is that we all have racist attitudes in this country - as much as we try to deny it. Why did you feel it was important to identify yourself as a 'mixed married black from Berkeley? (I apologize if I have mixed you up with another poster) You are confused - just like many of us because of this insane preoccupation that we have with 'color' in this country. Sorry if you feel I blasted you - but just trying to see who and what you are. Most posters here admit to having some racist/bigoted attitudes - and explain why they have those attitudes. There are many situations where 'race' should not be a factor. Crime is one of them. When we examine the elements that contribute to 'crime' in our country - what group of people are most exposed to these 'elements'? The amount of melanin in the skin has nothing to do with the criminal. . . but using statistics to justify identifying a sub-culture of a group of Americans by a 'broad brush' is where I see you going. Many in this discussion are comfortable using the behavior of this subculture to identify an entire group who has the same color.

You haven't been keeping up Fred. EVERYONE is listening to Cosby now!!
Stay abreast of current happenings in the 'black' community. You get caught up in the negative - and actually - that's OK. It keeps you in your little area of negativity and your representation of an ignorant voice in the wilderness - that keeps us all on our toes so we don't adhere to your plan of divide and conquer.

So white citizens are going to save the black community from the thug/gangsta lifestyle promoted by (c)rap music?

Since 'white citizens' haven't done it so far - except to take the money of the 'rappers' before they became their own producers and established their own studios - those citizens who are interested in making America stronger will take the steps necessary to guide teens from the 'rap' culture. By the way - the majority of teens who purchase 'rap' music are 'white'. Get to gettin' Fred. Save your own - we can't wait for you to show us how. America needs to shore up its values for all of our citizens. United we stand - divided we fall. We're not falling with you and Rush!!

You are spot on for this affects everyone in the community reguardless of race, until society as a whole places value on what is real, and stops immerseing itself in the all about the status quo, the flashy cars, clothes, puttin in work so to say.... We are in for more of the same.. Im sure all races were present when the shots rang out, and as i said before excuse me for my sarcasm, for i have been to the edge and back, i have lost countless numbers of friends and counterparts over the years some dying in my arms far from home. So for me to hear of things like this, and to think of all the people who have died to protect this great nation.... It is pathetic at best, this maddness must stop, we have a major conflict that could erupt at anytime in this country, and we all are going to have to come together and unite to see it through. To save each other and restore the liberty and freedom that we all been entitled to not by right, but by the sacrifices of many who gave all for this freedom of this great nation, for it is not free, and it is not to be squandered by the scufflaws who choose to live by the thug creed. My condolences to the deceased and injured, and let us pray that this type of activity will cease for a while..... PEACE

Keep it simple. Fewer bruthas equates to less crime. I'd ask you to name one community where blacks have become the majority that has enjoyed improved quality of life, but we all know there isn't such an example.

Instead, just blather on about how this is all the shared human condition -- because every culture venerates pimps and criminals as their heroes, right? Oh yeah, it's the evil Jewish entertainment complex that forces black men to represent themselves so poorly.

I strongly suspect that many people in Fayette county wonder why blacks bother moving someplace better only to insist on making it just like the place they left.

That is brazen. Parents need to rethink. A party means party crashers.

I don't know them, but everyone wants the best for their kids. I know these kids wanted a party and the parents were there trying to make it good and respected. They couldn't control the fact that some tried to crash it. This is a really bad deal and I think the parents and kids must feel awful.

I do know these kids that were the hosts of the party. They are very good kids. Unfortunately, teenagers do not always use wisdom and common sense. Putting this info of the party on Facebook and MySpace was a big mistake! This opened it up to the general public. Obviously, too many people showed up to the party including people that didn't even know these kids or parents. This was a terrible incident in which one young man was killed and others injured. I am really upset over the event since I have a child who is friends with many of the kids that were invited and actually was invited herself, but chose not to go (Thank God!). Please do not judge this event when you don't know all the facts or any of the people involved. We will never mature as a country with all the racial slurs and prejudices! These are kids and it unfortunately happens in all cultures and races! Our prayers are with all parties involved!

About thirty years ago when I lived in South Florida our young neighbors' teen-aged sister was visiting them for the summer. Trying to make her feel at home they decided to give her a party. No FaceBook, no MyPage, just telephones and word of mouth--but after the party had been going on for about an hour -a group of about forty guys crashed the party. We were sitting outside when this occurred and our young neighbors came over frantically asking what they should do. I went over and told this group that I had called the police and they were on the way and they should leave immediately. Thankfully, that was before almost everyone had some kind of weapon. They piled in their cars yelling obscenities and throwing their beer bottles at our cars and in our yards. There had been no alcohol served at the party. We were hounded with drive bys and catcalls for several nights but after getting the police to hang out on our street a night or so that stopped. Things were much simpler then--if this had happened now the results may have been the same. Oh, by the way, everyone involved was white.

It can happen to anyone, and if Parents don't believe it, they need to remove their head from the sand.

This was a terrible tragedy, and I’m shocked and dismayed to see that race is being portrayed as a relevant factor in the shooting. This could have happened at any out of control teen party in Metro Atlanta. If anyone is to blame, other than the shooter, it’s the parents that thought it would be a good idea to host a party for teenagers and allow hundreds of people to attend. This party should have been closed down as soon as it became apparent that many of the attendees were uninvited guests. My sympathies to the families of the victims.
